Pronunciation

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Pronunciation

Post by organist »

Has the Church produced a guide to the correct pronunciation of English terms in the readings? If not, why not given the vast mixture of backgrounds? Recently in the Gospel and Homily we had tunic pronounced as tonic. I am told Nigerians pronounce the u vowel differently. Mine's a gin! Epistle to the Philippians became the Phillipines. Rout came out as route. Guidance is needed. :)

Paul Inwood's chat on the matter of mispronounced bible book names, and words such as covenant is hysterically funny.

A couple of years ago the narrator of the Passion on Good Friday took it into her head to pronounce Pilate as Pilartay.
Goodness know why. But it was more than a little distracting.
Personally it drives me bonkers that for Holy week in particular church cleaners, flower arrangers, servers and musicians all go to great lengths to get it as good as it can be ...... but readers resist all suggestions of rehearsals or training days.
Grrrrrr!

So is the town through which Jesus and his disciples travelled to leave Jerusalem (in Luke 24:13-35) pronounced Eee-may-uus so that it scans properly in Marty Haugen's "On the Journey to ... " hymn? Or is E-moss, as my current parish priest pronounces it? And who would tell the wrong one that he is wrong?

I have only ever heard it pronounced as i-MAY-us.

A priest leading a retreat I was on (think it was 1983!) pronounced it em-mouse (ok, /eˈmaʊs/ :) ). He'd just come back from a sabbatical in the US, so maybe he caught it there.

Pronunciation is different depending which part of the country we come from. There have always been variants and I'm not sure it's a good thing to try and force everyone down the same route. Guides are useful perhaps but they would never be enforceable.

Latin pronunciation also varies widely. Living in Spain for a couple of years in the 1960s it was amusing using the moorish aspirated g's in words like 'genitum', or pronouncing words like 'cedat' as 'theydat'. Happy days!
