Happy Advent

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Yes, I am afraid. The 10am Mass is child-heavy, which we always bear in mind, but such "childish-only with lots of actions" we only sing occasionally (seven times since 2004).

The primary school serves more than one parish, and when we expect to have lots of families that are not regular attenders at our parish here, we try to include something that we are confident that all the children (including little brothers and sisters) will know. We could probably do better at this if we knew more about what the children do learn at school, but we never think about it until too late.

Why not make a mental note to contact them early in the New Year? This could usefully inform your planning for all the liturgical seasons, not just Advent [<- on-topic reference]

We're using several items right the way through to tie the season together. So, each week:
Gathering: Litany of the Word (Farrell) with verses chosen to suit the week (not week 3 when we're doing O Come, O Come Emmanuel)
Advent Candle: The Light of Christ (Haugen). Yes, I know it's an Easter song but we're being selective with the verses. Then we're bringing it back for the Epiphany with the big "Forever, Amen" coda!
Gospel Greeting: Alleluia Veni Emmanuel from Concept Music (link below).
Bakhita Acclamations from Celebration for Everyone: Mass Settings Supplement
Communion Procession: Be strong and do not fear – a homespun setting.

Changing items:
Week 1: There is a longing (Quigley) and Let all mortal flesh keep silence
Week 2: O Comfort my people and Like a sea without a shore
Week 3: City of God (Schutte) and The light of Christ (Fishel)
Week 4: Magnificat (Ward) and The Angel Gabriel from heaven came

There's a misprint in this psalm in Veni Emmanuel: the third left-hand chord in the psalm tone should be a full triad on the G (spaced G-B-D) and not just the G alone.
The piece may also be found (sans misprint) in Psalm Songs (volume 1, page 76), and in Laudate (#50), where it is set to a different Grail translation, which I don't care for in this instance.

Last week I mentioned the Andrew Wadsworth Penitential rite.
In case anyone is interested in it, it was sung on BBC Radio 4's Sunday Worship today at Our Lady and the English Martyrs, Cambridge.
Not sure who publishes it but have a listen on iplayer - It really is rather nice.

Indeedy, it was delightful. I've e-mailed the choirmaster and will post info on his eagerly awaited reply.

Alan, I suspect there are a couple of other misprints in Veni Emmanuel which could catch out someone trying to sight-read it (perhaps you could confirm?): The SATB final chord for the response is Em (with consecutive fifths), not the G in the accompaniment or guitar chords. Also the accompaniment for the first section of the psalm sets the ascending rise as E A D instead of the E G D in the vocal line. We plumped for E G D.

Thanks for this setting - I might say that I went through about 5 settings of this psalm with our young twenty-something cantor and she chose this one. The anticipation of the Christmas carol is very appropriate.

You are quite correct on both counts, JW (it's worse than I thought!). The E in the choral bass at the end of the response should indeed be a G, and the A in the organ part should be a G, following the voice part.
I congratulate your cantor on her discernment. :D

The organist and choirmaster at OLEM sadly reports that it isn't published. I'm grateful for his very quick and polite response to my e-mail enquiring about this piece.
