SSG Annual Conference

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

SSG Annual Conference

Post by presbyter »

I notice that notice of this has yet to appear on the home page.

However -

IF - you are coming to the rehearsal for Mass at 11.00 am at Saint Chad's

AND - you would like to be in the instant SATB Schola - OR a Cantor - OR both

Would you mind dropping me a pm with your email address? Thank you.

(Just in a mild panic that the instant choir will have 26 sopranos, 5 altos, no tenors and one contra-bass who cannot sing above fiddle G)

The date is Saturday 14th November. I think the idea is that we gather, rehearse for mass and have mass as Presbyter has said, we then have the Crichton Memorial Lecture (Bishop David McGough is the lecturer) followed by the AGM of the SSG, and Evening Prayer. There are suitable breaks for socialising, tea/coffee and lunch. All at St Chad's Cathedral, Birmingham. My understanding is that all are very welcome, but that only SSG members may attend, speak and vote at the AGM.

Would it be possible to have full details publicised fairly prominently on the SSG website? It seems to have got stuck at advertising the August 2009 Summer School!

The date was publicised in the last two issues of Music & Liturgy. There will be further details in the issue due out in mid-October, together with contact details for booking a free place but, until then, and until something goes up on the website for wider consumption, the details are as follows:

SSG ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Incorporating the Annual Crichton Memorial Lecture:

‘The Word of the Lord’

by Rt Rev’d David McGough,
titular Bishop of Cunavia

Saturday, 14 November 2009
St. Chad’s Cathedral,
Birmingham

timetable:

  • 12 noon Mass preceded by a music rehearsal at 11 am
  • 1.00 pm Lunch
  • 2.00 pm Crichton Memorial Lecture
  • 3.00 pm Annual General Meeting
  • 4.00 pm Evening Prayer

Mass will be celebrated by Bishop McGough. Members and non-members are warmly invited. To book a free place (so that we can cater for you), please either email: secretary@ssg.org.uk or telephone 07540 532785, or PM me.

(Non-members are also very welcome to stay for the AGM, but are not permitted to vote)

We cannot be there as we are promoting the SSG at Westminster cathedral hall. Would it be possible for someone to raise the links with PMM at the AGM? (see my Panel of Monastic musicians postings) It would also be great to have an account of the PMM meeting in Music and Liturgy - perhaps an editor could contact the editor of the PMM magazine on this?

For non-subscribers to M&L like me, this is the first publicity received. How will non-members be attracted if it's only publicised in a members-only magazine?

I may have dropped my membership because my musical activity has been severely curtailed, but I still have the SSG website as my home page and take a great interest in its debate and activities.

Fortunately, the event does not clash with our Parish Fair this year and I should like to attend. I look forward to seeing familiar faces again. And I promise not to take part in the AGM.

That's one more voice who offers Soprano/Alto and Unison. Please save her from this split personality. :D

Choir is on Thur - will ask.
What music is planned (assuming a competent SATB presence)? This might affect the turnout

So far - there's a piece by someone called Alan Smith. Does anyone know him?

This is news to me! I suppose I ought to come along and sing then.

I hope this will not affect the turnout, CB.
