Incidental Music for Mass

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Hello Claire, will do, but it may not be for a week or so - I assume you are referring to Sundays 5, 6 and 7?

Can't go very far wrong with Boyce and Stanley (William and John, I mean).

OK, here are some suggestions for Sundays 5,6 & 7. (including Boyce and Stanley). As requested there are links to the scores for all the suggestions and soundfiles for some of them:

Sunday 5

Start: Bach, BWV721 Erbaum Dich Mein, o Herre Gott. A recitalist once told the story of how he was guest organist for a service in a European church. There was quite a lot of chatter, till he started playing this piece and the whole church went quiet. The YouTube file is a brilliant interpretation by a master organist and creates a really prayerful atmosphere. I doubt that many of us could get away with taking it this slowly though. The text of the chorale is a prayer for forgiveness.

Communion
Grave by Sabadini - link to score here:

Stanley Opus 6 (2nd set) Voluntary 8 - link to score here:

Sunday 6

Start Zipoli, Canzona in D minor (works well on soft stops)
Score here: http://icking-music-archive.org/scores/zipoli/Zipoli_03.Canzona_Dm.pdf
Soundfile: http://www.virtuallybaroque.com/trak2761.htm

Communion: Zipoli, Versi in D minor - pick one (I think No. 3 is most appropriate) or more, but always on soft stops and perhaps a bit slower than played on the soundfiles
Score here: http://icking-music-archive.org/scores/zipoli/Zipoli_02.Versi_Dm.pdf
Soundfile: http://www.silborg.net/fcs/zip_4v_dm_fcs.mp3

End: Boyce, Voluntary in G
Score here: http://icking-music-archive.org/scores/boyce/Vol/Boyce_Voluntary_02.pdf
You can listen by accessing the Soundfile at this link:
http://npor.rcm.ac.uk/cgi-bin/Rsearch.cgi?Fn=Rsearch&rec_index=N04410 You may wish to limit the number of trills - or omit them altogether. Make sure this is played in fairly strict time.

Sunday 7

Start: Psalm 38, Anthoni van Noordt,
Link to score: http://imslp.info/files/imglnks/usimg/7/75/IMSLP05705-Psalm_38_Noordt_Anthoni.pdf

Communion: Alexandre Guilmant, Communion from L'Organiste Pratique

End: Heures mystiques Verset 39 ( Sortie ) Léon Boëllmann Op. 30, 18

How time flies, is it really 8 years?

I'm working through the Novello Village Organist series at the moment. Well worth a look if you like Victoriana, including quite a few transcriptions!

Again, should not this entire section be reclassified under 'Core repertoire' or, if this is too incidental, under 'Sounds Off'. Is this not more of a musical subject rather than a liturgical one?

On the other hand, if one moves away from repertoire selected on largely musical grounds and looked at the selection of such music according to the liturgical themes dominating a particular service then this could stay here.
