Canticum Rudolphus

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Canticum Rudolphus

Post by Gwyn »

Reno erat Rudolphus
Nasum rubrum habebat;
Si quando hunc videbas,
Hunc candere tu dicas.

Omnes renores alii
Semper hunc deridebant;
Cum misero Rudolpho
In ludis non ludebant.

Santus Nicholas dixit
Nocte nebulae,
"Rudolphe, naso claro
Nonne currum tu duces?"

Tum renores clambant,
"Rudolphe, delectus es?
Cum naso rubro claro
Historia descendes!"

We live in exciting times!

They'd be even more exciting if I could remember my schoolgirl Latin! Anyone got a translation - or don't I want to know?

Oh, never mind - think I've got it.

Did you know that male reindeer lose their antlers about the end of November whereas fenale reindeers don't lose theirs until they give birth in Spring. Thus, the reindeer that took Santa Claus on his rounds must have been female (since, according to the pictures I've seen, they had antlers) which is reasonable since only females could have taken Santa all over the world in one night without getting lost! OK, that's my bit of sexism over for this year (a whole new year is available next week!)

That's brilliant, Gwyn! It brought a tear to my eye and a red glow to my nose. Perhaps you also know the GIA Latin Songbook? Home, home on the range and suchlike, as sung in Rome :lol:
