Singing in Church

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Singing in Church

Post by keitha »

I have read quite a bit about the problems with singing while we have the coronavirus around. In my view, Germany is adopting a sensible approach, for the reasons set out in the following:

Yes, this article has been doing the rounds over the past week. It should be read by all.

Some people still don't get it, and maintain that wearing a mask helps to protect others against whatever you are exhaling. It may help to a certain extent with droplets, but not with aerosol, as the article explains. The problem of course is not just the material the mask is made of but whether it fits tightly all round the face. With most masks, there is no tight fit.

If you don't believe in the existence of aerosol and wear glasses, put on a mask and see if your glasses don't fog up when you speak or sing. There's the aerosol!

If you don't know what tight fitting means, look at health care staff when they take off their PPE, leaving livid marks on their faces where it has pressed into the skin to get a good seal. That's why they can't wear PPE for too long — it's too painful.

We still have a long way to go, and the danger is that some bishops are in too much of a hurry to get bums back on seats and may well cut corners as a result. It will be interesting to see what happens in some American dioceses where bishops are already starting to release restrictions while at the same time numbers of cases and deaths are still surging upwards in their dioceses. Crazy!
