How accessible is your church?

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

We made alterations to the church a few years ago that involved re-arranging the toilets. The local authority then required at least one to be suited to disabled use and came and inspected it after completion. (They then required the white walls to be painted grey to provide contrast to the white suite for users with poor sight.)

I was involved with one church where the disabled access people, the health and safety people and the historic churches people all came to head to head and couldn't agree about anything! Delicious! It's a listed building, and they wanted to add disabled access by punching a hole through a side wall to enable access from (and to) the adjoining hall. In the end this project not only went ahead but they also punched another hole through the opposite wall to create another emergency exit door. But it was fun while it lasted....
