Second Sunday of Advent

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

I'm afraid that, although I try to do things as well as possible, I have failed on the sung Propers front due to resistance from certain quarters (not PP though!)

Hit 'em between the eyes with the GIRM Hare, it might not yield results but it's soooo satisfying being right.

If it is right, Hare.
Remember, those prospers are only proper to Year A.

Seems that it is.
Here's a quote from (I think) Chant Cafe:
Apart from a very few exceptions, the Entrance Chants of the Mass are drawn from the Bible, usually from the Book of Psalms. The great majority of these Introits or Entrance chants are from the Old Testament, because most of them were set in place in the Liturgy before the New Testament even existed. This means we are praying prayers and singing melodies that the early Christian Martyrs would have sung and some of these chants were sung in the temple during and before the time of Jesus.

It is significant that Mass opens with God’s word addressed to us. Already in the Entrance Chant it is God who comes out to meet us.

All interesting stuff.

:D

Just realized, in my original posting, I put the wrong Recessional hymn - should have been "Come thou long expected Jesus"

Well, here's our humble offering:

O Comfort my people – Waddell
Stay awake! – Walker
Ps 84: Come, O Lord – Baty
Alleluia Veni Emmanuel – Baty
Litany of the Word – Farrell
Bakhita Acclamations – Baty
Advent Fraction Song – Baty
Advent Communion Song – Baty

Perhaps too much Baty in there :?

This morning we had:

Prepare ye the way of the Lord (Schwartz- Godspell)
Just the two lines repeated x4
Psalm: Response sung to 12 string guitar at lectern. Verses spoken by same musician
Chant Alleluia
Belmont Holy and Lamb of God
Euch Acc Spoken
Wait for the Lord
The voice of God goes out.. (Woodlands)

I was not involved this morning. It saddens me that short cuts are happening, PP has stopped singing Dialogue and Doxology
We have kept sung psalms going since the 80s. Also, I think if a psalmist is not going to sing the verses, then they belong to the reader.
If I say anything, I am told I am the only person who would notice.

Yes, annoying when you see your work dismantled.
There is no good reason not to sing the Eucharistic Acclamations
– and plenty of good reasons why they should be sung by all.

Thanks Nick,
For Christmas season we will have my home grown Alleluia and Lamb of God.
If your music works and serves your parish, no problem.

Yesterday

My favourite Beatles song! But I fail to see the liturgical relevance. :D

I know.
For John the Baptist it should have been "The long and winding road."

The plan in my small corner of the west of Ireland:

Opening: Bind us Together
Penetential: A Thiarna ...
Psalm said, the musician didn't know a setting
Alleluia Seinn Alleluia
Offertory O Comfort my People - Waddell BI ÍOSA IM CHROÍSE
Holy Holy nameless and unapproved version that's not quite the right text either - but everyone sings
Eucharistic acclamation When we eat this bread ST COLUMBA
Amen Missal chant
Our Father sung in Irish
Communion: A Mhuire Mhaithair (a nod to to 8th, given that most working people simply won't get to church)
Final hymn Our God Reigns

For all anyone might argue with some of the choices - this is a parish that sings, and our biggest goal is to make sure it stays that way. So the opening hymn is chosen from a very small pool which are guaranteed to engage people.

More Irish than usual this week, due to who was available. It's been a bit sparse the last couple of months.
