Bernadette is married to Owen Alstott. Their 16-year-old daughter Joanna Ruth ("Jo") is having surgery and treatment for thyroid cancer.
NPM announced this week that Bernadette, who was due to present a workshop and the final plenary address at their annual convention in 10 days' time, would not now be able to attend.
