"Ah-men" or "Ay-men" ("Ay" as in "day" etc)

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

How on earth did we manage to spin this out for so long?

How indeed! - but in the 1950s, in a junior seminary where such things mattered it was definitely "Ah" in Latin and "Ay" in English.

However, that's probably enough! - I leave you with this link:

Should the Eucharistic Prayer ever end in any other way?

I have just come back from Ireland and they say ay-men but I was saying ah-men. Then we got into some old, just about remembered babbled prayers and I found myself just automatically saying ay-men. Mind you, all prayers and responses were done so quickly it became a race to just try and keep up.

The Catholic/protestant thing - I remember being told one lot said it one way but can't remember which way round it was.
