MASS OF THE LORD'S SUPPER

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

MASS OF THE LORD'S SUPPER

Post by HallamPhil »

Central United Reformed Church, Sheffield (Cathedral closed for re-ordering)
20.00 Bishop John Rawsthorne

We glory in your cross
Glory to God - New Wine Mass (Jakob)
Psalm: Our blessing cup (Hurd)
Triduum Gospel Acclamation - Holy Thursday (Jakob)
Washing of feet
Servant Song
Do you who follow understand? (Jakob) - text by Dufner set to Waly waly arranged for Assembly, SATB, organ and piano
Prayer response: O Lord hear our prayer (Sosa)
Eucharistic Acclamations & Lamb of God - Belmont Mass (Walker)
Feed us, Lord (Walker)
And did you know? (text by John Bell set to a tune the name of which I have forgotten (!) and arranged for Assembly, SATB and organ by Jakob)

The blessed sacrament was then taken in procession from this upper room into the streets of Sheffield. During the procession to the temporary Chapel all sang Pange lingua (English). So many had gathered that not all could enter the Chapel. The watching started with Tantum ergo. There was sung Night Prayer at 2245 and Indian members of the congregation maintained the watch through the night as is their tradition.

There would be Sung Office of Readings and Morning Prayer at 10.00 the following day.

At Our Lady, Lillington, we sang:

We should Glory in the Cross (Wellicome)
Psallite Gloria
Psalm - The Blessing Cup (Murray)
Gospel Acclamation – Praise to you, O Christ, our Saviour (Farrell)
Offertory – Ubi Caritas (Wellicome)
Lenten Acclamations (Wellicome)
Lamb of God – Bicester Mass (Wellicome)
Communion Processional - This is my body given for you (Psallite)
Transfer of the Blessed Sacrament to the Altar of Repose – Pange Lingua (Latin) with a pause before continuing with Tantum Ergo.
Watching – Stay here and keep watch with me (Taize)

We have no foot washing as, at 80 years, our PP cannot manage this.

We decided to stick with the Psallite Gloria we’ve been doing for months as we’ve not yet introduced a new one and didn’t want to launch into something unfamiliar to the assembly for Holy Week. However, as the assembly now sings the Psallite one solidly, we added all the harmonies, and the altar boys rang a variety of bells throughout the first and third sections. It worked well, I think.

Last year, our PP introduced scampering – the altar boys enacting the disciples running away, after the Blessed Sacrament was transferred to the Altar of Repose. They all put up their hoods and, with their heads down, walk quickly away, around the church and out. It was startling effective, I found.

Christ the King, South Chingford.

Will you let me be your servant
Belmont Gloria
The Blessing Cup (Ressurexit - 1st psalm)
A New Commandment
During the washing of the feet: Mandatum (2010 Words) - Wood and Let there be love shared among us
God is love and where true love
Belmont Acclamations
Belmont Lamb of God
This is the body of Christ (Bell)
This is my body
Stay here and keep watch with me.
Tantum Ergo

Our Altar of Repose has to be in the hall and the whole congregation processes. Previous years experience have found it impossible to keep the singing together during the procession so for the time being we start in silence with the choir starting Stay here and keep watch once they have reached the hall.

The church was full (with people looking for seats and major problems in the car park). Today could be interesting as we always have a lot more people on Good Friday.
