Alleluia for Advent

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

For a third year in succession, Alan Smith's Advent Gospel Acclamations from Baptised with Fire, slightly tweaked.

I fear it might be that wretched "Stay awake (clap, clap) etc."

In previous years we have used the Russian Alleluia from the Taizé books: it has a good winter feel to it, and the two 16' pedal stops on our toaster give a good impression of a row of Russian basses. A teenager with an electric bass has added an interesting "chiff" to the pedal line on occasions. This year we are using the "Mass of Christ the Savio(u)r" by Dan Schutte, which includes its own Alleluia. I can't recommend it as a setting - anodyne is probably the best description of it, but our pp has chosen it for use until further notice. With some generous reharmonisation it is possible to get a bit of feeling into it.

Our pp has convinced himself that the request for consistency in the acclamations can only be met by using a whole mass setting from Kyrie to Agnus Dei.

BTW, shouldn't the title of this thread read "Alleluia for Advent?"

In the past, this one by Michael Prendergast and based on Veni Emmanuel.

'Hurry, the Lord is near!' from Music for the Mass, volume 1, no 74, though not quite at the breakneck speed indicated - more like dotted crotchet = 84.

What on earth is wrong with the text in the Missal?

Q

(ps - that's "what on earth is wrong with . . " in the sense of "Why not use . . ", not "There's so much wrong I just can't explain it".)

Text in the Missal only indicates the verse – not the Alleluia!
