Those things one can't do without

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

nazard wrote:In vernacular hymns "Now thank we all our God". It is right for all sorts of occasions, and no one seems to have been able to express the joy of thankfulness quite so succinctly. It is a marvelous excuse to draw full choruses to reeds and mixtures with the couplers and bring the roof down.

For a complete contrast, when leaving the church late at night after a good practice, I love to sing alone the "Nunc Dimitis" to a simple tone. In a way it is the same sentiment.

Perhaps more on topic, for St Cecelia's day, "When in our music God is glorified." The Stanford tune (Engleberg) is poor, the Haugen tune is considerably worse, but it does go well to "Sine nomine". Now that is one thing we would be poorer if we did without: the music of Vaughan Williams.

Now does anyone have anything for Sea Sunday to see off "Eternal Father, strong to save." Its just too much of a cliché.

All those 7ths - YUM!

Lead us Heavenly Father, lead us? Lovely flattened 7th in the second (or third, depending how the music is laid out) line - and you can have wonderful time with the punctuation at the end of verse 3 - "thus provided, pardoned, guided..." - welcome to Rubato City!

"Love Divine" to Blaenwern. Seems to encompass what it is all about. That one is certainly on my funeral list.

Beg to differ there. Engelberg is a much-underrated tune, was written before Sine Nomine and goes well with "When in our music" which, moreover, was written for that tune and not the RVW one. I think that the long notes in the RVW do not go as well with, for example "When in our MU___sic God is glorified", as opposed to "For all the saints____ who...."

Agree that the Haugen tune is inferior.

Fascinating! Have never heard any of these texts, let alone tunes, sung in a Catholic church, only in Anglican churches or on Songs of Praise. Perhaps it's a Welsh thing?

(From which you can judge that they wouldn't make my Top Ten!)

A big Meldrew-esque "I don't believe it."
Angel voices is an excellent offertory hymn particularly suitable for musicians.
How can I sing thy majesty Coe Fen is just a delicious match of tune and words.

As I don't know when I'll die and, therefore, when my funeral will be, I can't prepare a funeral list. But I do hope to have a bit of Liza at the crem.

At the crem I want Colours of Day ,for the chorus at the start (think about it) and "Smoke gets in your eyes" at the end.

SC, Angel Voices is in CforE and regularly (when the theme of the Mass permits of course - you would expect no less from me) crops up at the 11.00 Sung Mass at St P----'s (don't you love those 19th century literary conventions?).

If the other three don't appear in Catholic hymnals, that surely is the loss of Catholic hymn singers!

Others, with which I threatened the forum:

The Day Thou Gavest
O Love Divine (no, not Blaenwern/Stainer but Wesley words and Wesley tune)
Give me the Wings of Faith (San Rocco)
Thou didst leave Thy Throne (Margaret) - sound kenosis there!*

Watch this space

Mithras

*adnittedly this is for sentimental reasons - the hymn, not the kenotic christology

Hang on though - doesn't the SSG home page state that although Catholic in origin the Society welcomes those Christians from other denominations interested in music and liturgy -and I belive there were at least two Anglicans at Summer School last year (which I seem to recall took place in an Anglican establishment!).

Love me. love my hymns

All are welcome here. But I don't think SC was suggesting otherwise, to be fair.

And I think we're drifting into those things we love, rather than those which we simply can't do without!
