The New Texts: Events for Parish Musicians (announcements)

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

Still nothing for Southwark (please correct me if I'm wrong, anyone). The series of talks about the new translation arranged by the Diocese (e.g. at Canterbury) don't seem to address the needs and interests of parish musicians.

On the other hand ... perhaps this has been in the air long enough now for those of us with an interest to get our own thoughts in order. A shame, though.

New Music for the Mass: a day for parish music directors, organists, singers and other musicians

You are invited to a day at the Cathedral Centre, Salford, on Saturday 25th June (10.30 a.m. – 4.00 p.m.) to look at music for the new translation of the Missal.

Martin Barry (Director of Music at Salford Cathedral) and Fr Peter Jones (parish priest, composer and chair of the Archdiocese of Birmingham Church Liturgy and Music Committee) will present a day of new music for the Mass, introducing musical settings written for the new translation of the Missal, including a close look at the forthcoming collection Glory to God from Decani Music, edited by Alan Smith and Peter Jones.

The admission charge is £10, which includes a buffet lunch and tea, coffee, etc., during the day. Please pay on the day upon arrival. Cheques should be made payable to ‘Salford Cathedral’.

For catering purposes and the production of resources please ensure that you book for the day by e-mailing: martin.barry@manchester.ac.uk
You can also e-mail Martin if you have any questions about the day.

If you do not have access to e-mail then you can ring Cathedral House on 0161-834 0333 in order to book for the day. Please give your full name and contact details.

You may or may not know, HallamPhil, that I wrote a book of that title in 1975, when the full ICEL missal had just come into use. It was basically a guide to the contents and use of the missal. It didn't sell well and went out of print very quickly.

I've just turned up my copy of it. The last paragraph of the book reads (italics added):
Making the most of the Missal' requires above all, then, a concept of the liturgy as the worship of the people and priest together, participation as an expression of worship and a sharing in the entire action of the Mass, texts as a not unchangeable instrument to be judged by their ability to express the worship of the people who use them. Though the Missal is now in our hands, there is a lot of adjustment and instruction to be done. If the present round of liturgical reforms is coming to an end, the liturgical renewal has hardly started.

Not much has changed in 36 years, has it?

A sense of year 0 followed by permanent revolution, John? Of its time, perhaps?

I was not aware of that, John but did you know Gerry Burke who used to be a priest in westminster. 'Twas he who chose the title ... should we expect a writ in due course?

Just to let you know that at least I bought a copy. How about a second edition John - Making the Most of the ICEL Missal?

and found it very helpful - thank you very much to Martin, Peter and the organisers!

I do wish we could have brought away just one line of music from each of the items we sang to help us sort out memories
