It's not a question of right and wrong. I've been working in an office which only has PC's for the last three years and am still exasparated by their complexity.

And while I am probably one of those arrogant Mac users, you can't deny they're half the price, much more user friendly, far less susceptible to bugs and somewhat prettier too!

setting psalm tones

Can anyone tell me how I get more than one word per note in Sibelius? I'm trying to write out psalm tones so need a good chunk of sentence on that first brieve. I'm sure there's an easy solution, but I can't find it.

Thanks Nick,
I knew it would be something simple, ctrl+ space is the way forward on a PC.

Another method - more complex, but more flexible - is to attach each syllable/word to to its own note in Layer 2. the hide the Layer 2 notes and enter your reciting note in Layer 1. In order to accommodate the varying number of notes in each 'bar', you can either count 'em and change the time signature accordingly (then hide it using Staff Attributes) or turn off checking for extra notes, as per this entry from the Finale manual:

Check for Extra Notes. If you try to add too many notes to a measure, or extend the duration of an existing note beyond the maximum number of beats per measure when Check for Extra Notes is selected, Finale displays the “There are too many beats” dialog box when you leave the measure. If you want to override Finale, choose Check for Extra Notes from the Speedy Menu to remove the checkmark, then enter the note. When this option is not selected, you can enter as many notes as you’d like in each measure, and Finale will not display the “There are too many beats” dialog box. Remember that any extra notes you enter will extend past the barline of the measure, unless you choose Position Notes Evenly Across Measure in the Measure Attributes dialog box.

NB. That last sentence is important.

This seems like a lot of work, but if you do a lot of this reciting note stuff (and I did when I typeset Psalm Songs), you will find it worthwhile. The problem with the CTRL-SPACE approach is that everything under the reciting note effectively becomes one syllable, which can be tricky from the layout point of view (but fine for the odd isolated occasion).

I hope this helps.

1.4 anyone?

Docmattc: In Finale, you can put in a "hard space", ie one which the computer recognises as a character, not as as an invitation to move on. This is done by holding down the Alt key and typing in 0160 on the keypad (NOT the numbers at the top). As this is an ASCII code I imagine it would work in Sibelius as well. It has the effect of tying the words together thus persuading the computer that they are in fact one word but preserving the space.

I'm sure this is obvious too, but how do I persuade Sibelius that I don't want a time sig? At the moment I have to write out psalm tones in 12/4 (Breve, two crochets and a quaver to each line)

I have a similar problem as a want to write out Hodie Christus Natus est in 5 line music for my soloist who doesn't read numes. (not that I do that well!)

In Sibelius 4 (but, IIRC, in earlier versions too), the simplest way to hide a time signature is to delete it! Just remember to answer 'no' to the offer of re-barring your music.

This is the method that the online help suggests. No doubt there is a fancier way of doing it - in House Styles, perhaps - but I can't be bothering with all that.
