Re: GIRM vs Musicam Sacram

Thanks for the clarification Gabriel I did work in a parish where the practice was that they sang a short chant a few times - Taize Laudate Dominum for example at the end of Mass. It rounded things off but did not hold us up. Having dropped the final hymn and heard a few comments to the tune of "I m...

my thank you would be for the congregation to join in the singing with a bit of wellie Amen to that. I play much better when I'm accompanying rather than leading. Also I then know which verse I am on. Amen to that too! Very embarrassing when you launch into v4 when there are only 3. A quick volunta...

Well a good opportunity would be 18th December http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/classical/bachtfc.shtml always assuming one is allowed to ( vide the on-topic part of this thread) I might just do it then. I confess the fugue is a bit beyond me, but I can manage the toccata well enough for the congregatio...

the organist usually busking some sickly, over-sentimentalised rubbish as they go, mostly on a vox angelica manual stop and a bourdon on the pedal Afraid I don't have much time for sickly rubbish. I tend to go for rubbish on full organ, or solo trumpets! People should leave feeling uplifted and not...

That final hymn!

In September I abolished the final hymn for most occasions, moving to a hymn of thanksgiving (usually) after communion and a voluntary to accompany the procession at the end of Mass. We explained to the congregation the reasons for this as given in "Celebrating the Mass". The change has met with sur...

Hymn number 188 "God the Mass is ended" in a certain hymnal still in popular use.

In a parish I used to be in a service sheet contained an unfortunate typo in 'Soul of my Saviour':
Body of Christ, be thou my saving guset

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I had a chat with the PP last night (well, I told him what we were doing and he agreed!) and we will using most of the Schiavone text but not the tune of his Kyrie. The PP will use the Schiavone prayer to introduce the theme of the day and symbolism of the wreath...

I guess this thread is the appropriate place for this question. At choir practice last night we were discussing our fees for weddings and realised that we had no idea what other people charged. Our choir (about 20 people) charge £50 (collectively, not per person) for a wedding and employ a somewhat...

According to its website, my diocese (Hallam) has a Council for Liturgy made up of 6 people (Bp, adult education, schools and music advisers among them). I have no idea what it does though. I've been in the diocese 14 years and don't recall ever seeing any output from the 'Council'.

I wish my PP was sufficiently musical to even consider singing in time let alone walking in step, 5/4 or not! When I was a student we had Mass in one of the halls of residence, there were maybe 70-100 present and we gathered in a lively way (ie lots of chatter with folks we hadn't seen for a week or...

Coventry Gloria

Its not over used in our parish (we haven't used in in the 4 years I've been playing there) but has been done I'm told in the past and I plan to use it for Christmastide this year. I have a young trumpeter who is quite good and as brass parts have been alluded to on this topic, can anyone supply me ...

You need say no more! What do you do with it at the moment Sid? I think saying the Amen should never be an option if anything else is sung (but persuading PPs of this is not easy-its the key acclamation in the Mass and should be acclaimed. I wonder though if the congregation (or even the clergy)real...

I forgot to say, I don't know if technically there are issues with entertainments licenses for such things. You might want to check, or you might decide ignorance is bliss!

I'm not aware of regulations detailing use of churches for concerts. The Sistine Chapel has been used for concerts so there can't be a general ban. We have concerts occasionally in our church and our main criterion is that the content is sympathetic to the nature of the building (so Def Leppard woul...
