Re: The continued use of "old translation" mass settings

HIgh Peak, I agree, and having met you a couple of years ago, I empathise with you. We seem to have forgotten the art of conversation. Quite a few years ago we may have been momentarily energised by the notion of 'collaborative ministry' in the Bishops' document 'THE SIGN WE GIVE'. One has to ask wh...

Re: The 'New' Translation - your recommended music settings

I really do hope we have moved on from the notion that we have to use the totality of a mass setting by one composer. As far as I am aware, the expectation is that we sing the Mass but not necessarily one composer's setting. We should be free to select from the settings available and the only strict...

Re: Reception by eucharistic ministers

Not even Christopher Walker could recall writing the article so perhaps I should give up on that avenue of enquiry! The problem is that it seems to take so long before the congregation sees any distribution to them. There are eight Eucharistic ministers at each of seven masses and usually one priest...

Re: The 'New' Translation - your recommended music settings

I arrived at St Lawrence, Tampa four months ago to find a congregation lustily singing DeBruyn's Mass of Resurrection but they had sung this at every Mass for the last 3 years. I stuck with it for a while and then in Advent/Christmas I introduced the Eucharistic Acclamations from Mass of Creation, t...

Reception by eucharistic ministers

I am thousands of miles away from my back copies of liturgical magazines. Does anyone recall, as I do vaguely, an article by Christopher Walker written quite a few years ago perhaps for the SSG magazine and perhaps entitled 'Called to holiness' or something like that? In the article he made some rea...

Re: Christmas Greetings

Christmas greetings to you too! Christmas here is a little different ... no snow, temps of around 80 degrees, 1200 for one Mass in a banqueting hall, poinsettia (red Christmas flowers) engulfing the altar, sermons on scrooge and Christmas Carol, being informed that Santa's 'ho, ho, ho' is derived fr...

Re: Responses to the Prayer of the Faithful

I think the more important consideration is where the prayer is happening. Of course it happens in the silence after the expressed intention and is collected by the response. In the same way when the priest says 'Let us pray' he has to allow time for that to happen before proceeding to the Collect.

lost in translation

Printed in a Worship Aid for a wedding over the weekend was the following line from the psalms

"The Lord is neat to those who call him"

Is that an example of inculturation?

Re: Third Sunday Of Advent

I should have added earlier (but did not fully appreciate) that at every Mass my warm-up of the assembly would be limited to 1 minute today since before Mass we also had the Blessing of Hay. I've never come across this but folk were encouraged to take blessed hay for their mangers scenes at home but...

Re: Third Sunday Of Advent

IncenseTom, I recall from my university days that there was a fellow student called Colin ??? who used to play there at Keithley. A rather fine GDB organ as I recall. Do you know what became of him? PM me please.

Lost in translation

Having moved from Sheffield (Yorkshire) to Tampa (Florida) there were bound to be some issues. It's all gone rather well but on Monday I chose and played/sang music for the Immaculate Conception and discovered, to my horror, that the Americans have even mangled the refrain of 'Immaculate Mary'. The ...
