Re: What's the difference..?

I had not seen SC's response to my post before the thread went off for its purgatorial cleansing ( ). We are pretty much in agreement. In relation to the very young, I accept that they are capable, generally, of picking up fairly meaty stuff - the youngsters in our great choral foundations show that...

Morning Worship Sunday 6th September - St Therese

In case it may be of interest, I hear that on Sunday morning, Sunday Worship on Radio 4 (after the 8am news) will be a service of prayer from the Catholic Church in Coleshill, Warwickshire, with a liturgy in preparation for the arrival of the relics of St Therese. The preacher will be Fr John Udris,...

Nick, on the basis that you seem to think there may be money left over, I assume that that you did not mean Katherine Jenkins!

Re: Sign of Peace

I am told that in some parishes in the Birmingham Archdiocese 'swine flu measures' have been implemented and that people are being asked to make a simple bow of the head to their immediate neighbours as a sign of peace and that this seems to be working pretty well.

Re: 'Firmly I believe and truly'

Missalettes/sheets - agree entirely with Nick. Psalm texts - when singing the Responsorial Psalm I believe we should use the precribed texts; when singing psalms elswhere in the mass or other liturgies I am very happy to use Haugen, Haas et al with their varied texts (in addition, people must rememb...

Re: Sign of Peace

I too am fed up with the 'extended' peace rite that has crept in and the outstretched arms at the Lord's Prayer. Last Saturday I was at mass in Seville Cathedral and the family in front were Korean. They turned round, each joined their hands in prayer, and bowed to those of us in the row behind. Eve...

Re: Happy Assumptiontide!!

I was lucky enough to have spent 'Assumptiontide' in Seville. I have never been a great fan of processions (particularly the May variety) but I learned that when done properly with both devotion and enthusiasm (and probably guaranteed good weather!) they can be tremendous acts of witness. I visited ...

Re: New Mass text and music

Can anyone tell us who the members of the 'small group of people' are (just out of curiosity)?

Re: What's the difference..?

I am, generally, no fan of Songs of Praise , and watch it very rarely, however, I think SC is going a bit far in blaming it for what seems to have happened, and, in reality, I'm not sure that he is. It is just one of a number of factors that influences taste. What it boils down to is that, generally...

Re: What's the difference..?

it looks as if I have had better experiences than JohnQ. I am thinking of 6 and 7 year olds (ie KS1) singing Boyce and Stanley at mass coupled with some reasonable hymns, some Taize and Elgar's Ave Verum Corpus, taught from CD's by teachers who are not musically erudite but who learnt 'what goes whe...

Re: What's the difference..?

johnquinn39 raises a fair point, but I do not think the Birmingham situation is quite as bad as he fears. Much of the stuff that he mentions is still being used in parishes in the Archdiocese. I think the problem is that CJM Music came along and provided a lot of music for the schools in the archdio...

Re: What's the difference..?

Thanks for the enlightenment SC. I was pretty sure of my ground on the Anderson, less so on the Inwood. A noted liturgist in these parts vetoed the Inwood piece when I put it forward as an Agnus on the ground that, strictly, it was not a trope, so I wimped out! It won't happen again!! I'm entirely w...
