Re: Meerkat

Well, I 'aint goin' nowhere... my Phoenix is a waitin' for anyone who wants to come! We had a splendid Advent Carol service on Sunday 6th last. We invited all the priests in the diocese and any choir directors and organists of their churches to come. I somehow doubted we would have a chrism mass sce...

Re: How important is core repertoire?

IMHO practically pointless. Most churches work under their own steam anyway - more often than not, successfully. Foisting a standard repertoire on all churches... what's the point? Fine if you have an occasion when a number of churches come together or possibly when there is a diocesan event where a...

Re: Choir guidelines

Following in the spirit of this thread I had a 'beauty' last evening... As I work on the local diocesan commission I get get many enquiries and calls about various things relating to church music etc. Last night I received a call from an elderly woman (who plays the organ and conducts a small rural ...

Re: Music Workshops

I am open to correction but I have a sneaking feeling that the publishers of mainstream modern composers make some form of payment towards presentations - It probably falls into the area of marketing! As for what people are prepared to pay... The Lawton workshops over here are EUR20 to get in (Ok, b...

Music Workshops

Interesting this... Just looking at the amount of 'touring' and workshops being provided... ask yourself 'How many such workshops are being provided for good choral music - workshops etc. In my neck of the woods it is Liam Lawton - look at his website for the massive amount of plugging. and - EUR20 ...

Re: Choir guidelines

Ditto! I had - believe it or not - a soprano who sang woefully flat - a woman in the mid-fiftes - "That's young" you may say. I discovered only last year that she also sings in a female barber-shop group as the female equivalent of a bass. How did I miss that detail!!! I pulled her aside a...

Re: Celtic

What does un-Irish mean? The 6/8 timing is (in folk genres) a jig - certainly is over here in the emerald isle! However, you try singing O Carroll's Alleluia at a trad jig tempo and notes get left out! Ever heard children's choirs singing it? It has that amazing 'laxative' effect when the kids overt...

psalm refrains

Can someone clarify please... If a church is using grail psalms each Sunday (which most do, I assume) and they choose to print a service sheet, are they permitted to legally reproduce the words of the REFRAIN? (nothing to do with music setting at this point) I am aware that Grail psalms are copyrigh...

Re: What's the difference..?

Seems to me that the line of communication is a bit estranged! Did he use the word 'Obey'? or is that embellished? (was it a jovial or serious tone?) Seems to me - from reading your blog - that both of you may not be tuned into the same frequency! Get talking! It is possible both of you do not have ...

SC... still thinking in the Irish 'punt' terms... surely not! That went out with the dinosaurs :P
When are you guys going to go the euro route!
SC... maybe you should grab a cheap flight over to see this organ! You would be assured of a warm welcome!
I'll stand you lunch!
