In my experience there are only two reasons why people volunteer for parish councils: 1) To get things changed. 2) To get things changed back. Every parish I know that has one of these wretched committees, when they were set up most parishioners couldn't be bothered with them. A few extremists volun...

I thought that a feast starts with first vespers, which is the vespers said the evening before. All Sundays are feasts, and so have a first vespers which should be said about tea time on Saturday. After that it is liturgically Sunday, so any masses should be Sunday's mass and reflect Sunday's themes...

If you have the licences and are producing service sheets, I'd stick with it. The monkeying with the words in all in print books except the catholic hymnbook is likely to upset a lot of people. Not all of it is gender neutering, some is removing references to sin, sacrifice, hell and other rather si...

I found myself in this position a decade ago. I went back to the books I used as a child, "Michael Aaron's Complete Piano Course" as a basic tutor, and "Hours with the Masters" as a graded repertoire collection. They are both very good. Practice as much as you can, adults don't l...

Call me an old fuddy-duddy but I'm never completely comfy with anything other than For All The Saints being sung to Sine Nomine. Same goes for Eventide and Abide With Me, Repton and Dear Lord & Father of Mankind. Rockinghan and When I Survey The Wondrous Cross. To sing anything else to such tun...

Are you preparing for Tridentine High Mass in Abergavenny? If so please keep the board informed. I would love to come. You do need a Deacon and I think subdeacon for high mass, so it may be sung low mass you are actually thinking about. Have you been to tridentine mass at Prinknash? They say it on f...

We only had an evening mass, as is usual for HoOs, and 50 came. That is about normal historically, but this year numbers have been very low for holidays, only 30 for Ss Peter and Paul. Our Sunday mass attendance is ~100. Demographically it was about the normal mix. They did sing well though - they m...

You are lucky to have the option of obeying directives of whatever sort. My position is: 1) Pride of place is to be given to plainsong - not here it isn't. I have to fight like a tiger for it. 2) I get pressured to used the oddest text substitutions for the gloria, Agnus Dei etc. No musical setting ...

The writer makes two points that appeal to me. 1) The idea that we should go forward from here in peace rather than arguing with one another. I was never keen on the changes: I was happy how things were, and didn't at the time see a need to change anything. I have softened a little since. Holding th...

I went to Clifton 11 o'clock mass yesterday, so I will give a quick resume of what was done and perhaps Reginald would like to comment. Two hymns were played, one as entrance and one as recessional. The first was "For the healing of the nations" to Picardy, and the last "In Christ the...
