Spring Assembly

I was at the Northampton Diocese RE centre at The Holy Ghost parish in Luton on Saturday for an excellent Spring Assembly. For once, I chose the 'words' option for the afternoon workshop (rather than the music one) and was v pleased to have done so - we looked at various texts from the Mass to great...

Re: Responsorial Psalm

I have written my own (except where we have something else to use). We each have a large ring-binder with everything in the right order in each cycle, with rerefence details for other sources where necessary (e.g. see book such and such, page whatever) It was a big project many years ago but has sto...

Re: The wickedness of face cream

This thread started some time ago with Jonah being called to go to Nivea - this morning in my church he was being called to go to Nirvana - not once but several times. Did he get there I wondered?

Re: Gloria settings

Thanks High Peak for that offer! Only one problem - how do I send you a PM? I've never done this before.

Re: Gloria settings

Thanks everyone for these suggestions. the Belmont Gloria is the one that they already know (and would like something a little livelier). I don't know it, so can't comment. I've also suggested refrain settings, which might suit them. They've got an organist and a lead singer, so they could do one of...

Gloria settings

I know we've talked about settings of the Gloria in the past, but I have just been asked by an Anglican colleague if I could recommend a v simple sung Gloria for a small congregation with no choir - with the new words (i.e. to people of good will etc). They have a leader but I'm not sure if she sing...

Re: Offertory hymns

I don't know about the Kyrie from a Mozart Mass, but Nottingham (77 77 metre) is found in Common Praise (number 581) and is ascribed to Wenzel Müller (1747-1835). As I learnt it at school, I went first to Songs of Praise (our school hymn book) but was surprised to find that Nottingham is not there. ...

Re: Pentecost sequence.

As for the Corpus Christi sequence, that has me stumped. I've tried to find something suitable and failed - it has many verses which are irregular. On a more ambitious note, if you have a good choir, you could try Finzi's Lo the full final sacrifice (which is based partly on this sequence in a trans...

Re: Pentecost sequence.

As above, we use Holy Spirit Lord of light (tune Veni Sanct Spiritus - Samuel Webbe) words translated by Edward Caswall, which is in Celebration for Everyone 261. We sing it as a congregational hymn in the right place. Works well.

Re: International Hymn Choices

Another one that can catch people out depending on whether they are from the RC or CofE tradition is Lord enthroned in heavenly splendour - a super hymn, which we sing to Regent Square, and that's fine. However our ex-Anglican clergy are used to the wonderful St Helen (not in our book unfortunately)...

Re: Offertory hymns

As several have commented, there are some rather ghastly ones designated as for Presentation of the Gifts, so i usually go for seasonal or scriptural relevance. As for Take my life and let it be consecrated Lord to thee (good words!), you could try it to Nottingham - this is the one I learned at sch...

Yes - I always thought that it should follw straight on. In my Missal, the rubric clearly states 'The following Psalm is taken up immediately.' No mistake there.

Re: Easter Alleluia

We don't. I think it would just be a step too far. We sing a Byzantine chant version (once), with the veses, and then repeat the alleluia at the end.

We sing it - as always -unaccompanied to a version given to us some years ago by an assistant priest. Don't know where it came from.

I too have just re-read Musicam Sacram - and was pleased with what I read. It's all there really.
