Re: Archbishop Roche and other new Cardinals

And in the C19th - according to the Wikipedia list of English Cardinals Manning, Howard and Newman 1879-1890. For a country with a small Catholic population we do seem to have more than our fair share of cardinals. NB, I do like it that the parish newsletter of St Vincent de Paul Liverpool refers to...

Re: The Queen's Platinum Jubilee

St Elizabeth in Latin is Santa Elisabetha (notice the 's' instead of the 'z'), which declines as usual. Alternative forms of the name such as Isabella (= Isabelle) can also be used. But there is no real Latin equivalent of Elizabeth when used as a Christian name , so it should remain undeclined. Wh...

Re: Communion Songs

Are there any other ministers at the eucharist who are expected to forgo communion?

Re: Communion Songs

With a mixed band of musicians it is possible to stagger communion so that instrumental support is always there. With a solitary organist the choices are limited to some unaccompanied singing, or a non communicating organist. Neither are ideal. A modern song with a strong memorable refrain is easie...

Re: Easter Vigil lights.

Thanks folks for clearing this up. Its a rubric I seem not to have spotted among all the others. I really don't like Fr Turners attempt at a connection between the Paschal Candle and electric lights. Somewhat far-fetched. But thank you for looking it up. So it starts. The only day I am not playing i...

Re: Easter Vigil lights.

We have readings in darkness too, candles extinguished and shaded reading desk lights for readers and musicians. The only living flame is the Paschal Candle. Massively symbolic. Lights on and bells at the Gloria. Members of the congregation bring bells too. We always sing a Gloria with a refrain so ...

Easter Vigil lights.

According to my Missal lights are extinguished before the Vigil starts, but I can find no instruction for when they are switched back on, just an instruction to light the altar candles for the Gloria.
Have I missed something?

Re: Limited supply of Psalmists for the Easter Vigil

Has anyone else had to accompany the missal tone for the Exsultet because the priest who insisted on sing it (the long version at that) was so musically challenged that he was likely to set off somewhere in the alto register and end up like a Russian contra bass?

Re: Limited supply of Psalmists for the Easter Vigil

We used to do a version for two soloists with the first section swinging along in 9/8.
The new translation b*ggered that up - as with so much else.

Re: Easter Sequence

Only ever on Easter Sunday, optional on 2nd Sunday. Try G. R. Woodward's versification, with its rather jolly tune. You'll find it in the New English Hymnal at no 111. It's out of copyright (both words and tune), so if you twist my arm I'll copy it for you. It's available here https://hymnary.org/h...
