Re: Litany of the Saints

It should only be used at the Vigil if there is a baptism.

I am 100% with Southern Comfort on this. Very good, sensible comments.

Re: Coping with mistakes/failures

I had a feeling there had been a similar topic in the past, but can't actually find it... Apologies in advance is this is a duplication! The thread you are thinking of, Hare, is http://www.ssg.org.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=611/ , and very sad reading it is, as the originator, despite many s...

Coping with mistakes/failures

I had a feeling there had been a similar topic in the past, but can't actually find it... Apologies in advance is this is a duplication!   We all make mistakes from time to time, and suffer problems caused by others.  In over 40 years of playing in church, at the end of last year I had the worst &qu...

Re: Christmas on TV and radio

Indeed. A dreadful ditty, I've only ever had to endure it once. Deo Graatias. I was brought up with Come to the manger , and don't think it's quite as bad as all that! Gatty was not the most wonderful of composers, admittedly, but Sidney Peirce Waddington's arrangement makes it a whole lot better, ...

Not IMHO! We had a PP once who insisted on "Come to the manger" He was only here for a year thankfully!

Re: Only 20 hymns

Maybe some communities just don't want to sing. Another scenario - When I first started at my current church 23 years ago, I was only "contracted" for the late morning Mass on Sundays, plus a weekly choir rehearsal. I discovered after a few months that PP was attempting to lead some singi...

Re: Only 20 hymns

What he said. And also just mentioning that this thread is an off spin from the thread about parish music in an age of dwindling resources..... in that their is a need for a simple book/CD or website where the average parish can get some help for drawing together people to sing together without a s...

Re: Only 20 hymns

No, I see exactly what you mean. And there is no reason why All that I am etc should not co-exist with Praise to the holiest etc. I suppose, being from a non-conformist and Anglican background where, 40/50 years ago every church had its own organist and choir, I find it difficult to grasp how things...

Re: Only 20 hymns

No point dwelling on it - the idea of a 20 hymn repertoire is laughably ludicrous any way!! There are times I despair of this forum. While I'd like to be agreeing - I'm also aware that for some places it may be a reality. I'd hope that at least it's 20 hymns plus some settings of the Ordinary. But ...

Sadly, that is the case at my church too. PP's decision. I don't know why they can't just have a quiet Mass.

Re: Only 20 hymns

I suppose if we are going to have a repertoire of only 20 hymns most of our liturgical niceties would have to go out of the window. The Entrance Antiphons for the Assumption vary from " Glorious things are spoken of you, O Mary, who today were exalted above the choirs of Angels into eternal tr...
