Re: What people sing

pews2 wrote:"Abide with me" has been a favourite for generations and will probably remain so. It does not quote a single line of scripture,

(Apart from Luke 24:29, which provides the first line of the hymn and the inspiration for the whole, IIRC.

Re: Humankind

Ladies, do you feel excluded here? Not sure that the cultured and cosmopolitan types that hang around here count as a representative sample. But take someone of less than average educational attainments and less than average theological education, or a child for that matter, and ask whether they be...

Re: Humankind

They use the word humankind quite a bit in prayers, hymns and dubious scripture translations. Is this a way of saying mankind that's employed by those who do not understand how the English language works? The word itself seems pretty unobjectionable: the meaning is clear and unambiguous, and I woul...

(i) Ubi Caritas by Bob Hurd, from the collection of the same name (OCP). There's a good simple singable refrain ('Ubi caritas est vera, Deus ibi est') which meets the 'hands free' criterion for an effective Communion processional song. The text of the verses is fairly faithful to the Latin original,...

Re: Top ten hymns

how do you tell folks it is wrong to have a hymn to the BVM at Sunday Mass during May/October? I don't think I'd subscribe to the idea it's "wrong". We do occasionally finish with a hymn to Our Lady at these times of the year, and I've more recently had to defend it than to defend not doing it. The...

Will those pretending that they didn't understand the intention at the outset of this thread say ten Ave Marias as a penance and stop being so silly. Steady now! I merely wanted to point out that my choosing the same hymn eighteen weeks in a row (or whatever) doesn't make it (or me) popular! And an...

Re: Top ten hymns

What are the ten most popular hymns or songs in your church community? ... Popular with your community, that is. Define popular! (i) we sing them the most often; (ii) the assembly sings most lustily; or (iii) we get complaints that we don't sing X often enough. For (i), in no particular order, thes...

Well, modesty forbids... but actually yes.

(I think we should get back to Christian Initiation quick before we all get moderated.)

Re: Ballo in Maschera

If, like me, the rest of you didn't know what "onomastic" means, it applies to a signature when the body of the text is in another's handwriting. Do what, Dot? "Onomastic, ADJECTIVE: 1. Of, relating to, or explaining a name or names. 2. Of or relating to onomastics. ETYMOLOGY: French onomastique, f...

Second question: anyone out there from Salford, who can tell us what is happening with children's initiation in that diocese these days? The pattern established when Patrick Kelly was Bishop was: Confirmation first, at Pentecost in 'year 2', i.e. aged 7 or nearly; First Communion on Easter Sunday i...

Having them scattered around the building isn't a good idea anyway. Beg to differ. Organ purists will say this because a real pipe organ can't distribute the sound all round the building the way you can with speakers. But I reckon the distributed sound is much more supportive of congregational part...

Hmm... I guess I have a right of reply to all that, but I don't want to wash dirty linen in public. Suffice to say that (i) the old organist certainly wasn't "more or less thrown out"; (ii) the reasons for choosing the new instrument weren't that the old one "was costing more to maintain than it wou...
