... His answer was "dance, no; shimmy, yes"... Isn’t “shimmy” one of the words Bertie Wooster uses to describe the way Jeeves enters the room with a tray bearing a letter, telegram, cup of tea or whisky-and-soda? Not quite the same sort of preparation/presentation of gifts. I’m surprised ...

Sorry - my temperamental computer managed to post the above mesage twice, but I found that I couldn't simply delete the second one in its entirety! Could one of the moderators please remove this one?

Re: The wickedness of face cream
Has anyone else heard a reference to Stow on the Wold at the end of EP3? It is just right for us in Clifton diocese, of course. No, but that may be because my almost PP invariably says EP2 (the shortest) - and, as it happens, the longest Penitential Act. Does that say something? And while I'm about...

'Fraid I can't help you with that computer problem, Oops, and it would probably be ruled off-topic if I did. I was merely offering reassurance that on my computer the files opened OK - in Word - and looked very useful. The important question for the thread is whether the files can be opened by JW, w...

Re: Hymns for Wedding
And they do not open methinks. Sigh They do once you've downloaded them - you can unheave that sigh, Oops! Patrick Lee's collection "I wake refreshed" contains a wedding hymn that fits the tune "Michael" (a.k.a. "All my hope on God is founded"). It is covered by the Ca...

Re: lost in translation
Very "neat", Phil, but isn't this a candidate for the "Wickedness of Face Cream" thread - and an opportunity to remind readers of the other gems there?

Re: Peter Burke graces the Proms
Thanks, Phil. It's the only aspect of the Last Night that remotely resembles liturgy! On the other hand, there was a late-night Prom on 4th August after which the house lights faded, leaving the prommers holding little battery-operated candles, which we then extinguished in token of the "lights...

Re: Liturgical Tourism
Another European jaunt has given me further opportunitites to experience liturgies abroad. On both Ascension and Pentecost I was in Warsaw, first in a large and ornate church in the centre and then in a much newer one on the outskirts, which turned out to be much nicer on the inside than it appeared...

Re: All things to all people?
... the alternate weeks strategy - choir and organ one week and the band on the other ... also has the practical advantage that you don't have to have the whole cohort committed every Sunday. On the other hand, still taking the pessimistic view, it has the disadvantage that some people may be away ...

Re: Palm Sunday for guitars and flute
So.....what did you think of our Palm Sunday efforts? I thought it an appropriate selection, with sensitive use of the instruments available to you, HP (e.g. the plucked accompaniment to the Offertory hymn). Some contributors have already queried whether it's appropriate to have a recessional hymn ...

Re: Gelineau - The Lord is my Shepherd - guitar chords?
Would you recommend any other Gelineau Psalms as being worthy of merit? There is a set of standard "formulas" of tones given in the back of The Psalms - Singing Version produced by The Grail and published by Fontana (ISBN 0 00 621332 4) in 1966. However, The Lord is my Shepherd is excepti...

Re: Teaching New Music.....
Two very current examples would be As I Have Done To You (200% perfect fit for the Washing of the Feet last week), and We Walk by Faith (for 2nd Sunday Easter tomorrow). If the congregation don’t know the tune in the book, try to find one they do know that fits the words! I don’t know the first of ...

Re: Printing out words....! (of Mass Parts!)
I agree with Gwyn if the text quoted is exactly the ICEL text and indeed I include a similar text to his as a "catch-all" in the Mass sheets I prepare for my church. The question is: if words in the ICEL text are repeated to fit a musical setting do they remain ICEL's property or does the ...

Re: Next Saturday's Responsorial Psalm!
Welcome to the forum, DNBA! I have also heard recently that there are also "Common Psalms" for particular times of the year, which I understand can ALWAYS be used in place of the given Psalm of the day. Yes, there are, but the Common Psalm for Lent is ... Psalm 50! Laudate 48 has a setting...
