Chant based Eucharistic settings

Can anyone suggest good settings in Englsih of the Eucharistic acclamations and the Gloria which have a basis in plainchant or a "chant" feel? The late beloved Alan Rees's Modal masses and Paschal Mass come to mind. Dom Philip Gaisford perhaps. Please supply details of publisher and where ...

A Soldier's requiem

Pete How about trying Anglican cathedrals and public schools who might be interested? But be warned it is an expensive business sending music to people who never reply. Another thought is to get some of the work on to a website so people can sample it. My friend Barry Stronge has done this and I am ...

Psalm for Midnight Mass

Fintan O'Carroll has set this memorably - book with white cover published in Dublin! Have a look at Eugene Monaghan's settings "With heart and voice" for the whole 3 year cycle. Lovely Celtic feel to some of them - not all are successful. Avaialbel from the composer in Cardiff.

James MacMillan

I'm sorry to have missed - mind you I'm not a composer. I know the Panel of Monastic musicians enjoyed their day with JM. I'm interested to learn that part of the St Anne's Mass is in Laudate. Some of it is very singable but I have some reservations. Invite JM to a summer school?

Funerals

Yes it is hard to introduce sung parts of the Mass at funerals. One idea would be to have a guidance leaflet perhaps accompanied by a tape or CD. Ideally one would form a "funeral choir" to give a lead. The most popular setting seems to be the Celtic liturgy which is gentle and reflective ...

Loved it/hated it

Getting back to the topic after orgasms and sausage congas "At the name of Jesus" is a great hymn. I like it to "Evelyns" but the poppy type tune is just about OK. I don't think I know the Walker tune. "The duteous day now closeth" to that wonderful Bach tune "Be s...

Gwyn I'm intrigued How do you fit Vivaldi Gloria into Mass? Do you do highlights? I too will revolve in the coffin if Crimond, How great thou art or The old rugged cross are played at my passing. I want Faure or Durufle Requiem with lots of incense and "Jesus lives!" and "O worship th...

loved it/hated it

I used to dislike "Peace perfect peace" until I played it a big school funeral and it came into its own!! I love "Gather us in" and Alstott's "O holy Mary" - haven't introduced that in the C of E yet although we did sing "For Mary mother of the Lord" to that g...

Poisitioning

We are not really off topic because it's all about the choir's participation and role and how we see ourselves! I was brought up to always do the best I can but I have learnt some of my limitations as I have got older. Things are not as black and white as when I was young! I am even contemplating pe...

Loved it/hated it!

On another thread it was commented that our personal preferences shouldn't come into it but of course they do! My pet hates; If I were a butterfly; Kumbaya; O love that wilt not let me go; Colours of day; verse 2 of Hail Queen of heaven, Silent night Reasons - the naff texts, ghastly tune, slushy ha...

Nearly there?

Martin How has written very fine harmonies and extended arrangements for amazing Grace and other songs in "Songs of the Spirit" RSCM. Why are so many hymnbook accompaniments so banal? One year at SSG summer school Richard Jeffrey-Gray showed us how to improve them - repeat this workshop pl...

positioning of the musicians

I'm pretty broad minded. I love some of the chant and the Byrd 4 part mass especially the Agnus Dei, Thomas More group settings, children's settings (McGrail and Farrell) and Anglican settings like Darke in E and Wood in the Phrygian mode. There's a place for everything. Next Sunday we are singing S...

I heard part of that programme on Pick of the week and it was a real revelation to me. Could someone publish it please?
