Re: Remembrance Sunday

We've more or less settled on a format for our Remembrance Sunday Requiem Mass over the years. There will be a (1 minute) silence as part of the Bidding Prayers. The music list this year is as follows: Mass setting: Glendalough Mass, no Gloria. Gathering Voluntary: Opening of Bach's Actus Tragicus ...

Re: Liturgical Tourism

Thank you for this description - I've been wondering where technology will go next, and hadn't considered this type of idea. We have large screens around the sides and the best of them have very thin frames around the sides. In a church with lots of wooden panels, I use a photograph of one panel as...

Re: Liturgical Tourism

We have just returned from a holiday in Budapest and attended Sunday morning Mass at St Stephen's Basilica. There was a very good choir, but it was not what you would call an audience participation Mass - we all sat down for the singing of the Kyrie and Gloria. For the Memorial Acclamation the...

Southern Comfort wrote: Sat Jul 22, 2017 5:33 pm The problem with Walker's Belmont Gloria is that its chant alternates two tones without regard for the structure of the text.
We use the Belmont Mass and I do like it. But your evaluation of the Gloria is very fair.

Re: Gloria settings

I don't like to blow my own trumpet - because it's not a very impressive one - but both my Glorias are on the lively side. The first, from the High Peak Mass, is a responsorial setting. The second, from the Mass of St Philip Howard, has two versions - a responsorial setting and a through-setting; wh...

Re: First communion music

At ours the school has 1st Communion Masses on two consecutive saturdays, while the parish kids are on the final Sunday. Played at the school one today. It was introduced by the Head telling the parents that the Mass was all about the children .............. facepalm. I have recently had occasion t...

Re: First communion music

It is for the priest to call people to order during Mass if they aren't behaving appropriately. There is no excuse. Did he not meet the parents in advance and lay down guidelines? Surely a session with the priest should be a part of any parish FHC preparation.      :l...

Re: First communion music

And we have 59 for Confirmation this Tuesday... I have been discouraged from going to the rehearsal to ask them to sing, as there 'won't be time' to talk about music... Ah! In that I have an advantage; as well as being MD for the Confirmation Mass I am a Confirmation Catechist - so we jolly well DI...

Re: First communion music

Your point about the need for someone to get the people singing is so important. I used to do as I saw at Clifton, either say a few words of encouragement and/or run through a couple of any new bits before Mass, but now we have a prayer five minutes before, which is supposed to lead to a period of ...

I enjoyed that!

I'm in a reflective mood. We had our Deanery Confirmation Mass this evening. I'm still calming down from the flood of adrenalin. It went very well indeed. The execution of the music could not have been much better (especially considering that the musicians and singers were put together from several ...
