Re: The Trouble with Communion Processionals and beyond…

At the risk of causing a slight detour from topic, what is considered suitable to be sung during communion, in the light of the following from CTM: Many traditional Eucharistic hymns were composed for Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. They concentrate on adoration rather than on the action ...

Re: The Trouble with Communion Processionals and beyond…

Where I was organist previously a communion processional was started after the choir received (I tried changing this to choir receiving last and starting the singing as the celebrant received but logistically it didn't work). Usually this music was either a repetitive chant (a la Taize) or something...

Re: Remembrance Sunday or 33rd of the Year

I'm sure this discussion has been had in previous years. I'm of the opinion that the liturgical calendar takes precedence and where I used to play we had the silence post Prayer of the Faithful (10.30am Mass meant that this was at 11-ish) and we would sing "What shall we pray" (L 449) duri...

the OofS was on the BBC website but I can't see it in a quick glance before I go out to work. Lots of Durufle as I recall.

Re: Future of this Forum - for AGM on Saturday

I now ignore anything that degenerates into a petty squabble where one person just has to have the last word over another. I've become adept at skipping over those bits and getting to the more interesting and helpful stuff. The problem is that it seems this happenes to most threads. I would no long...

Re: Out of the mouths of babes ...

No point in trying to discuss........... ..........anything much these days in this Forum. Perhaps it's time to close it down. I agree Fr Peter. There was a time when this forum was a useful resource and support for ordinary parish musicians (while still making us all think). I fear the very people...

Re: Preface Missal Chant

I haven't talked to him about it, however mine used to sing the preface but hasn't done (in my hearing) since the NT (nor the doxology). He has been off ill a couple os Sundays, and I've been away a Sunday or two, so my sampling may not be statistically significant.

Re: Preface Missal Chant

Perhaps Fr Ruff, who headed ICEL's music committee prior to the final revision, could be asked to write something for M&L regarding the genesis of the Missal tones in English?

Re: David Haas

I'd add "Take up your Cross" to the list too, and "We will Rise again" The latter I played last at the funeral of a good friend earlier this year. The text (cf Isaiah) meant a great deal to her and is appropriate for funerals, healing services etc. For those struggling with the a...

Re: David Haas

As I said, I don't feel that these sweeping generalisations, for good or bad, about any composer's music is useful. In the past I have used 'You are mine' as a piece during a service of anointing the sick, and also at the funeral of a still born. I have used Mr Haas setting of the Psalm 104 in its p...

historical query re Prayer of the Faithful

The Diocese of A&B website has the following in its guidelines for the Prayer of the Faithful: The Roman Rite does not, in fact, envisage the inclusion of devotional prayers in the Prayer of the Faithful. Following a mediaeval practice in England , the ‘Hail Mary’ has been customarily said after...

Re: David Haas

As with all composers, some of Mr Haas' music would be suitable and other pieces less suitable, depending on the individual piece and indeed the opinion of the listener. It would also depend on the type of liturgy and position within that liturgy where the piece was employed. Generalising about the ...
