Re: In search of good communion antiphons

I do not possess a copy of Psallite because I have similar views to Presbyter. The intention behind it is good, and the outcome is sometimes effective in drawing the assembly into a murmuring of song, or at least creating a suitable reflective background at Communion. However, it comes nowhere near ...

Re: Happy Assumptiontide!!

In what ways do you think Villette's Hymne a la Vierge unsuitable for the liturgy at Assumptiontide, Dot? I have just had to look up a translation of the French to find out the meaning of the text. It's the kind of piece that takes up all your attention in the musical setting (It's unaccompanied in...

Re: Unaccompanied Sung Liturgy

I am most encouraged by this thread, which puts the emphasis on the most important part of liturgical music. I was unsettled by the imbalance between instruments and voices in our parish for years. As the instrumental group has dwindled, we now have a much better balance and I am more aware of the p...

Re: Happy Assumptiontide!!

For the choir: anybody here do Villette's Hymne a la Vierge ? A cross between compline in Notre Dame and a jazz club on the left bank. Smoky! Mithras Maybe a good description of a marvellous piece, but for liturgy? I think it is more for choir self-indulgence. There's wonderful polyphony that provi...

Re: PowerPoint Display for Hymns and Common Texts

That's the system they've just installed (using their Harnessing Technology fund) in the hall of the school where I lead a bit of singing "from time to time". It's all very well in school, but think about the drawbacks..... No suitable wall for a screen in church; No Harnessing Technology ...

Is it the silly season yet? This Board suggests it is.
(BTW I got 5/7)
This thread is nearly as bad as the one where men are comparing their organs. There's so much male pride on parade.

Re: Composing for beginners

And perhaps the CG meetings are not the place and I should gain some instruction elsewhere first. Nick: if you say that you haven't taken in my previous post. But it's good to hear that you've actually ventured out to a meeting. (Was it on the other side of the Pennines from Sheffield???) We know y...

Re: Composing for beginners

This topic was raised yesterday at the CG meeting. I won't attempt to summarise others' views but I will use yesterday's experience to reflect my own. A wide range of experience is already catered for. There were seven present yesterday. One does not have anything written down but words - works by e...

Re: Passive non-participation

As an active participant in the singing of Elgar's "Ave Verum Corpus" (why call it "Ave Verum" - makes no sense?) I throw out a challenge to those who make sure there is no mystery about it for those who listen - - give us your best translation of the words. Also, as I am sometim...

Re: Something delicious

There were a good many delicious items served up at Composers' Group. I'm so glad that Martin's work is being used. How many more CG works are being breathed into liturgical life? It would be nice to know. My latest effort to compose something had a life, and an encore, but only at a concert. I've l...

Re: Using Midi

We once had a couple of contributions by midi input into the organ at our church – the Agincourt Acclamations (used in anger) and Widor’s Toccata after Mass was over for no particular reason (we don’t have voluntaries). I was told off for playing along with Widor on piano (which I’ve played ever sin...

Re: Thomas Muir stuck in Africa?

Dowdy, doughty, whatever ..... can't remember what "t" word prompted the acronym in the first place. I'm glad you find the forum such a valuable research tool, mcb..... Did you ever spot the picture of the eponymous Eastenders' character that went up briefly against my real name? admin cla...
