positioning

Thanks for rising to the challenge! It's true that the large congregation at the Saturday 6 p.m. Mass do not sing well despite the efforts of a cantor and excellent organists and the provision of a leaflet with music. I think the building itself inhibits people because it is so vast. When singing in...

letting go

I really sympathise with you alan29. It's even more distressing to be dismissed because of the new PP's power complex. Result end of choirs and music tradition going back to the 1940s. One hears of reduced congregations and much sadness But there is life after the trial! Try to pray for those leader...

Christmas

My Christmas was very different this year. I always did my best to avoid the Vigil Mass as in my previous parish Midnight was the one that everyone was encouraged to come to and the Music group covered Christmas Day main Mass and I played the last Mass of the morning. This year I played 2 crib servi...

Clifton

Hear hear VML. I was so glad I had videoed it. And I emailed Richard Jeffrey-Gray to thank him too! I enjoyed the singing from Gloucester - it was a great sound. I had also taped the beginning of the Norwich service and that was pretty dire - celebrities are not a good idea and the modern setting of...

Silent Night

Apologies for the last comment - it's just that I don't really like "Silent night" at all - drunks lurching up to the high notes in the last line, twee gooey eyed version of the manger scene, singing it in the morning always seems crazy! And glockenspiels sound so sweet don't they? NOt muc...

funded by the National Lottery

Lucky you Gwyn! I'm interested that you got funding for a digital organ costing 50 grand. In my previous parish we spent 30 grand on a Cathedral Eminent. I did look at all the possibilities and played lots of different organs. Copeman Hart were the most expensive, the Allens salestalk the most seduc...

New Year resolutions

Be more thankful for the gifts I've been given
Practise more - I'll never get through the works of Bach at this rate!

Summoned to the Vatican

Martin Baker kindly sent me a copy of his address, which was well written and clear. He has also replied to my comments about the Macmillan Mass sung at the Saturday 6.30 p.m. Mass at Westminster cathedral which I attend and SSG members sang at. In his reply he was very dismissive of the work of Tho...

baby

Can Midnight Mass ever be the same again after that lovely joke! It sounds like a recipe for disaster - baby up too late and yelling, family travelling near a holiday, above all losing the focus of what we are celebrating!

Farrell to the rescue

Bernadette Farrell has written some lovely music for children with actions using sign language on the CDRom - wouldn;t it be good if more composers produced similar material?

What was missing Tsume was the procession by the choir with the ministers into and out of church. This gives the choir a greater feeling of involvement and participation. At least most of the choir can see the altar - at St Anne's cathedral, Leeds the choir could see nothing of the action of the Mas...

SSG AGM

What a splendid day! The AGM and lectire were interesting and the singing at Mass excellent. And how good to see priest, decaon and servers from the Society involved in the liturgy! Excellent informal meal afterwards with good company - what more could one want?

ministry of musicians

Merseysider You are lucky indeed! There are far too many stories of musicans unloved, "tolerated" and unsupported! And the same goes for priests! "Thank you" costs nothing! I often think of a Midnight mass when the assistant priest came right acros the car park to say thank you to me at 2 a.m. It wa...

Ministry

Now here's a subject I feel STRONGLY about. The Church simply doesn't recognise our ministry publicly. In the C of E choir and organist are regularly thanked for all they do. Why not organise a ministry day for everyone who has a ministry and throw it open to all - everyone has a ministry. In the da...
