Re: Washing feet
In 1998 the Liverpool community of L'Arche visited Iona. Foot-washing is a frequent liturgical activity for this community. It was later published in HOLY GROUND edited by Helen Boothroyd and Neil Paynter and published by Wild Goose Publications. I was so impressed by this that I repeated it at a wo...

Re: The Best Narthex in Christendom
The best narthex I have found is that for St Timothy's Church in Lutz, Tampa Florida. It is almost as large a space as the church (in-the-round) itself. But on entering it the space is mostly clear save a few sumptuous sofas. It must work wonderfully as a ritual gathering space. On other occasions i...

Re: Responsorial Psalm
I too bemoan the fact that the Red Collins psalm book is no longer published. I have two copies myself and often dip into these if we need something simple. Otherwise I use psalms written by several composers (including myself) and from several sources. I have never found one source alone to be sati...

Re: Easter Octave
I am aware of what the Missal says but it does seem something of an anomaly. On all other Solemnities the Creed is said whether it be Sunday or weekday. When you celebrate an octave of Solemnities it is only Sunday?

International Hymn Choices
I began several (3)of this morning's 4 Masses with a setting of Joncas' fine hymn text 'Three Days' to the Gustav Holst tune which UK folk will know as 'I vow to thee my country'. I mused that I had to travel to USA to play this great tune whereas while I was in UK I found no real liturgical use of ...

Easter Octave
The week between Easter Sunday and the following 'Divine Mercy' Sunday is the Easter Octave. I have often heard it described as a 'week of Sundays.' This being the case and since Sunday is a Solemnity should we not also be reciting/singing the Creed in addition to the double alleluias at weekday Mas...

Drowning them in the Sea
My knee jerk reaction this year (in USA) was to go straight from the 3rd reading into the Canticle without the 'The Word of the Lord'. This had been my UK practice but in USA it seems that the flow is broken up by having the dialogue after 'it was then that they sang this song'. Can someone help me ...

Re: Litany of the Saints
Hare, are you sure?
It's been so long since I've not experienced a baptism at the Vigil, I can't remember but I suspect one still blesses water (and thereby the font).

Re: Easter Alleluia
We use the plainsong alleluia to mark its return and then use Bob Hurd's Dedication/Easter alleluia with the three verses.
Thanks Paul for your note on the same pitch for the Lumen Christi. With the Deacon assigned to the task it makes no difference as he has no apparent pitch memory!

Re: Easter Sunday morning Masses
Our Vigil started at 8.30pm and finished at 11.40pm with 25 people received. Then one of the deacons approached me to ask me to play for a wedding . This was immediatey after the Vigil, the bride being one of those received! I was back at 5.30am for the 6am 'Sunrise ' Mass and the usual Sunday seque...

Re: Singing the Sunday Mass psalm
In USA there are plenty of folk with the musical skills and confidence. What they seem to lack is an awareness that it is the word of God. Priests rarely give it this significance by preaching on the psalm and few cantors recognise that the text could be their own prayer arising from a lived experie...

Re: The Baptism of the Lord
I think the epiphany should be epiphanies. Year A sticks with the magi but other years widen in to include baptism and the marriage feast, I think. In any case we did get bits of the baptism the following Sunday... or at least we did in what is soon to be Trumpton!

Gloria
I was surprised to discover that the US Bishops have drawn attention to the desire in the Roman Missal third edition to use the Gloria more frequently than had been the case. Sacramental celebrations of marriage and confirmation will now be among those to be accompanied by the Gloria (even in Lent/A...

Re: Saturday evening Masses
Over here in Florida we currently 1ave two Vigil Masses and like all eight weekend and Feast Day Masses (except weekday 6.30am!) there is music provided by yours truly. Here the fact that Mass might be quiet is anathema and even at weekday Masses they sing (without accompaniment) the opening song, A...
