Re:
I would find it interesting to know if organists play with the other instruments used at Mass, or if parishes have a clear demarcation between the organ Mass and the instrument Mass. We (in Buckie) have violins, flute, guitar and drums. The guitar and drums tend to play less along with the organ th...

Re: Robing
Thanks for the welcomes! There are certainly pros and cons to all of this. We are by no means fully convinced of the need to robe and are just exploring the issue. However..... Our main arguments in favour would be 1. to inspire the choir to give of its best and give out the message to the congregat...

Re: Pipes versus digital
There are many situations in which a sampled digital electronic can be a better solution than a pipe organ. Many of the continuo pipe organs that have been installed in RC churches in recent decades in pursuit of one particular consultant's ideology are unsuited for today's liturgical requirements....

Just to give an example of the point Nazard was making.... It would have been very helpful to have a quote to show what Nazard actually said, rather than having to scroll back through the entire thread to find the points made on the first page. <Netiquette rant off> Sorry about that. I'm afraid I'v...

Re: Amazing Grace
Teaching on the Real Presence is undone in a trice if a congregation are invited to sing "He comes to me in sharing Bread and Wine" or "Too soon we rise the Symbols disappear" Why oh Why, do Priests (admittedly not ours)insist on these hymns? At the risk of being rebuked because...

Re: T9 function on mobile phones.
If you consider that text speak is in danger of replacing the English language anyway, perhaps the new translations of the Mass are already out of date. Looking at the Gloria setting we can expect (If the North American model is anything to go by) a text language Gloria would hardly be any more diff...

T9 function on mobile phones.
Beware everyone of the T9 predictive text function on mobile phones. This (to the uninitiated) is when the phone itself decides which word you are trying to spell using buttons which are assigned more than one letter. When texting a message to one of our local clergy about one of the organ builders ...

Re: Robing
Hmm - we thought about wearing black but were worried it would make us look really like concert performers. The Anglican appearance is also true although comparisons would not be so obvious here in the North of Scotland.

Just to give an example of the point Nazard was making.... Our organ here in Buckie came from Fort Augustus Abbey and is a 3 manual 1970s R&D rebuild using largely Victorian Bryceson pipework. It cost us £5,000 in 1999. Installing the organ (including an update of the relays with solid state) ca...

Re: Does your congregation sing?
Most of our congregation will not sing anything but the most "cheesy" offerings of the late 60s and early 70s when many of them were in their 20s and 30s. Anything newer (in any genre) than this is dismissed as "modern rubbish" and anything traditional (even "O bread of Heav...

Re: Amazing Grace
Many people are in the habit of shrugging their shoulders about hymn words and accusing those of us who question dodgy practice of being obsessive. The fact is that when a sizable proportion of the congregation are not catechised (perhaps their is no Catholic school in the parish - we have no Cathol...

Robing
We're giving thought at the moment to our organist and possibly choir robing seeing as they're near the front of the church rather than in a loft. Current thinking would suggest cassock and surplice but opinion is divided. Is this garb, in fact, permissible for non-clergy? Can anyone suggest better?
