Re: James MacMillian's St. Anne's Mass - new words
Has he ever been on one of our summer schools? He's been a good friend to the Society - he led a really excellent composers' workshop a few years ago. I'd very much like to see him at Summer School. I don't think that would go down well with many here, mcb. And oh, another thing, there are all thos...

I mean, who the hell...

Re: James MacMillian's St. Anne's Mass - new words
As Paul Inwood has said somewhere, there are too many awkward leaps in this Mass (especially the Sanctus) and it shouldn't be used. Why some are persevering with it I just don't know. There is no place for avant-garde composers in the Church.

Au contraire, I am one of [his] greatest fans on this board, which is really saying something, since his most enthusiastic advocates are to be found in these parts.

Yes, but if we are not careful the Liturgy Office will just roll over to these new Institute of Liturgical Music Rightists, and what a disaster that would be.

Re: The complete & utter disorganisation of the Liturgy Offi
Yes, but has anyone really thought about this. All these new masses that we are talking about - hardly any of them will ever be used. The non-musically trained clergy want to get back to said masses ASAP, or we will all get used to the American masses again. Why else [moderated] do we fawn over the ...

"That's a good tune"
But avant-garde composers don't do tunes. In fact they do their best to avoid them, or disrupt them.

Re: Congratulations to Alan re Edinburgh
"the level of musicianship was significantly higher than a composer might hope to expect in a Catholic parish" Oooh, that's a bit harsh and sweeping, A? It's just that we have got used to different criteria in the RCC. We have a far less elitist attitude than the Anglicans, mainly due to t...

Re: Kevin Kelly on the new ICEL translation
Oh sorry P. I thought I was only agreeing with Kevin Kelly when he was trying to whip up a Tahrir Square response (ie riotous and rebellious) to Rome and the new translation. I thought that was the general theme here......
