Re: Paraphrases - yet again!

As I understand it, texts which are mandatory (Behold the Wood of the Cross or Exsultet) should use the prescribed texts. However, those which are optional (Reproaches or Ubi Caritas) don't have to. I'm sure there are those who will explain this more fully.

Re: Salazar Gloria

We didn't sing a Gloria last night. But at the end of the Gospel we linked into Paul Inwood's Joyful News to You I Bring, after which the deacon proclaimed, "The Gospel of the Lord". Worked well and the once-a-year brigade, all huddled at the back, sang heartily!

Re: Help, Lord, the souls that thou hast made

It's by a chap named JH Newman.
See Westminster Hymnal (1939 edition) and Parish Hymn Book.
Takes me back to primary school. :)

Thanks for the pointer, SC. An interesting thread which affects many of us in the UK.

Re: New hymnbooks

We have Laudate and, apart from occasional midweek use, it sits unloved on its shelves. We print weekly service sheets as they're much more flexible. There's a discussion about this very issue here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/300911236958173/ (Seventh post down!)

Re: One License takes over from Calamus

I'd be tempted to look at the fund-raisers separately. If it's a charitable event, most copyright holders will grant permission gratis. Friend of mine recently had a very nice letter from Paul McCartney, giving permission for some of his stuff to be performed and recorded by a Singing For The Brain ...

Re: New facebook Group

Yes, Musicky Liturgy Things is for workaday parish musicians and composers – as well as the person in the pew. It's just a place to share ideas and (hopefully) best practice. Not competing with this excellent message board or with Facebook groups for organists – am sure we can all co-exist! :D

Re: New facebook Group

Posts and comments flash up on your phone/tablet and it's so easy to like, laugh or cry.
Also, there's no moderation – although I totally understand why the SSG moderates a message board bearing its logo.

I'm presuming that the video ratio was slightly out – otherwise Cardinal Nichols has become shorter and wider!

Re: One License takes over from Calamus

Several weeks on, I'm getting to grips with One License. As a parish musician, I would say it's much easier to report usage as this can be done online on a weekly basis. Yes, the cost is going up – from £45 to £105, which is quite a hike for us. However, I'm reliably informed that part of the reason...

Re: Wedding tourism

I remember playing for a wedding a few months after the Charles and Diana nuptials: The bride's mother had noticed that Her Majesty had a separate procession so she decided to do the same and I had to play her in with the theme of Love Story. All I can remember is a large feather bobbing down the ai...
