Re: Mass translation may be revised?

Yes Nazard - I agree. Some horrors in the new translation, but many more in the old. The Gloria was a travesty and I for one welcome back all the phrases that got pushed out last time.

Re: The Baptism of the Lord

Point taken mcb - I just thought that as a feast of the Lord it should be on a Sunday (which was what I was told re the others) I also like to have a good ending of the Christmas season on a Sunday, ready to start Sundays of the Year the dollowing week. And another thing - we had only just welcomed ...

Re: The Baptism of the Lord

Yes - that was a grave mistake IMHO to transfer Epiphany and Ascention to the following Sunday. But don't forget that some feasts still retain their own day whenever that occurs (e.g. Ss Peter and Paul 29th June and Assumption 15th August and All Saints 1st November). However I think think if these ...

Re: Pipe Organs and Organists - Dying out?

Gosh JW that's awful! I don't think I dare do a similar survey of my deanery (except that it's not a deanery any more, but a pastoral area - don't ask!) for fear of what I might find. What I do know (and I am the Hon Sec of the local Organists' Association) is that I believe I am one of only two Cat...

Re: Cremation, scattering, etc.

Good point - has anyone read 'The Amercan Way of Death' by Jessica Mitford? It is on my bookshelf. I also used to have 'The Loved One' which was Evelyn Waugh's satire on the American way of death. I must have lent it to someone and it never came home.

Re: Cremation, scattering, etc.

Yes, very silly and unnecessary in my opinion. What's the difference between burying a body (returning it to the earth) and scattering the ashes in a special place (returning it/them to the earth?) Someone in my parish told me how she sacttered her husband's ashes on the rose-bed in the garden,which...

Re: Only 20 hymns

I agree with JW re the liturgical priorities he lists. However, I would prefer it if the bishops did not make a ruling. (And if they did, would it make any difference? I'm thinking of something on that other thread Liturgical Tourism). There is a place for Marian hymns once in a while - but more par...

How about ' Hail the day that sees him rise' for Ascension, sung to Llanfair?

Re: Sequences

We always do the Easter Sequence - Victimae pascali - beautiful plainsong with such a wide-ranging melody, sung well by the choir. As for the Pentecost Sequence, I'd love to do the plainsong but we sing it all together in the hymn version (Veni Sancte Spiritus - Samuel Webbe, in the translation by E...

Thanks MCB - now I know. An ingenious adaptation. However, I've never understood what is unacceptable about the word 'handicapped'.
