Re: Music Animator required
I wonder what it is that makes people think a guitar, keyboard or other instruments are what's required for a family Mass. Presumably they've decided the organ would not be appropriate? Personally, I can't see why the organ might be considered inappropriate for a family Mass. Then again, I would rat...

Re: Post of Director of Organ School and Organ, Diocese of L
From what I know of the situation, and I really do not know all the details, the Leeds Music department are really trying to save every penny they can, so I would imagine they would like to offer more money if they were in a position to do so. Perhaps if they can't attract the candidate they're afte...

Re: Robert Cardinal Sarah's message to 'Sacra Liturgia' 2015
One small point about the popularity of the EF - I know a priest who recently went on retreat to a Seminary in Bavaria run by the Society of St. Paul (I think). They use the Old Rite exclusively, and there are 150 seminarians currently there with an average age of 25. Now if I could I attempt to mov...

Re: Robert Cardinal Sarah's message to 'Sacra Liturgia' 2015
My understanding of/take on the BXVI reforms, for what it's worth, is as follows: Before the pontificate of BXVI there were (and still are) some who thought that everything that had happened before Vatican II was awful and what good news it was that it had been "abandoned" and "we've ...

Tom_Neal wrote: "it is tragic that Gregorian melodies which were known and sung by the faithful for centuries, have in some parishes been abandoned. Praise God we are finally seeing a return of this music into ordinary parishes; but there appears to be no effort from the SSG, which I find both...

Re: Music and Liturgy: Letter to the Editor
I have much sympathy with you, Tom, having felt like I was going round in 'liturgical circles' when having these very discussions in the past on this forum. There are some who seem to have a very different interpretation of the documents than we do. For what it's worth for those who are interested, ...

5th Sunday of Lent - St. Patrick's, San Francisco Choir of about half a dozen or so, 2 cantors, all accompanied by piano or organ. Hymns at entrance, offertory and communion. Silence at the end. The only one I knew was Unless a Grain of Wheat - the others were very cantor led, which I found distrac...

Re: Hymns for Wedding
I'm sure you'll have plenty of ideas, but I can't resist mentioning one of the hymns we had at our wedding in August.
"Christ Be the Lord of All Our Days" to the Repton tune. Lovely text combined with a rousing melody.

Re: The 'New' Translation - your recommended music settings
We sometimes use the revised St. Anne's Mass by MacMillan - Sanctus, Mem Acc and Agnus Dei. The congregation seem to have no issues with the changes to the text, however, we only use it from time to time because the PP feels that as the music was originally composed for a different set of words, it ...

Re: The 'New' Translation - your recommended music settings
For those looking for something slightly different, we're currently learning the Gloria from the 'Mass of Our Lady, Help of Christians' by Australian composer Richard Connolly. I don't think (but I might be wrong) that it's been approved by the English Bishops but it has been approved by the Austral...

Re: Christmas Greetings
I too thought the beginning felt slightly disjointed. They could have easily sung the 4th verse of O Come all Ye Faithful during the sprinkling and incensing of the crib and then sung the 'Dominus Dixit ad me' for the procession to the sanctuary and incensing of the altar??? That's how we did it at ...

Re: Responses to the Prayer of the Faithful
There are a couple of settings in Laudate which are fairly short. I've heard the choir sing 'Lord in your mercy' and the response 'Hear our prayer', but I've never heard a sung 'Lord hear us', 'Lord graciously hear us'. I have also heard the choir sing 'Be pleased to hear us' and the people respond ...
