Re: Malurgy

I know that I am a Catholic and that my Faith influences influences my views. I am merely being candid about my bias. Well I'm Catholic too, and probably unlike yourself, I have taken a solemn, public oath to preach and teach the Church's teaching and nothing else. As I said, enjoy your course on t...

Re: Year of Faith

Robert Mickens' evident embarrassment about so much of the Church's heritage Can you give us some examples from his columns in The Tablet over the last few months, please? An article from 1 June edition: m This short paragraph from the above encapsulates his disdain: 'These are tense days inside th...

Bob - just so we know and therefore do not misinterpret your posts - which side is that?

I know that I am a Catholic and that my Faith influences influences my views. :D I am merely being candid about my bias.

Re: Malurgy

I know which 'side' I am on and I know that it influences my views I think we're in trouble if the truth is subordinated to tribal or confessional loyalty. A historian must be evaluated according to the acuity of their insights, not which side they come from. I agree entirely with your second sente...

Re: Malurgy

Well, thank you, Bob, for your endorsement of one of the classics of liturgical scholarship — by authors of all denominations. I assume you are aware that, as with biblical studies, the denominational affiliation of the top scholars has been an irrelevance for a number of decades now. Today, liturg...

Re: Year of Faith

If memory serves me right Robert Mickens was fulminating against Pope Benedict XVI's choice of vestments at an ecumenical prayer service during his visit to Germany last year. I dare say Robert Mickens' evident embarrassment about so much of the Church's heritage will ensure that he never runs out o...

Re: Malurgy

I am not questioning the scope or depth of Gregory Dix' work; far from it - it is an impressive narrative with many thoughtful insights. Historical interpretations inevitably reflect the era and context within which the historian is working. Dix' cross-references include the Cheka, Gestapo and Hitle...

Re: Malurgy

Especially if there's a faint risk that consistent with Catholic Tradition is code for blasé about historical accuracy . Absolutely. The quest for historical accuracy is to be applauded; unfortunately some of the manifestations along the road of historical research - the Jesus Seminar springs to mi...

Re: Malurgy

The fact that Dix was not a Roman Catholic doesn't per se invalidate his research. Quite so. The CofE was begotten of political expedience at a time enormous challenges posed by the Reformation. Subsequently Elizabeth I made it a forceful instrument of State power. It was and remains the Establishe...

Re: Malurgy

The danger is that some people seem to think that inculturation in the liturgy encourages free and uncontrolled creativity. Just for clarity I should point out that sentence apparently by me is, in fact, the words of Francis Cardinal Arinze. Whilst Gregory Dix's views make an interesting read it is...

Re: Year of Faith

Ah yes, Bishop Mark at the Shrine Church of Ss Peter and Paul and Philomena in New Brighton earlier this year. A splendid day. Sum up in two sentences - ooh, err..... Here goes, but not initially in my words: The New Evangelisation: '... a good opportunity to usher the whole Church into a time of pa...

Re: Maryvale Institute

I hope you are able to complete your course; and if you are able to dispel or explain these rumours I am sure some people would be very grateful. Dr Petroc Willey was appointed a Consultor to the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelisation, and Dr Caroline Farey accompanied him to Rome for the Sy...
