Re: New Lectionary
This is surely heading towards a problem in getting copyright holders to agree to a mangled version of their text being used? Rumours have recently been heard which imply that the problem Nazard describes has been encountered already and the NRSV lectionary project is stalled. The rumours remain un...

Music for Pentecost
Once more, it was clear on the feast of Pentecost that we fail, through our music, to recognise that the Spirit is active in Mother Church. There exist a mulitude of settings on the theme of Veni Creator but a dearth of music acknowledging the presence and action of the Spirit in the Church. The ant...

Re: Triduum 2011 - Hope all goes well!
PP decided everyone should blow out their candles after the Exsultet . He was right, though, wasn't he? The lights should go on at that point, anyway. Sitting at home with no reference books, but if I recall the lights (inc. altar candles, etc) are lit at the Gloria..... Rubrics in the leaked 2008 ...

Re: John Ainslie in The Tablet
How disappointing it is to see that contributors here chose to strain at the gnats in Mr Cullen's piece rather than address the broader issue, which he, and Mr Ainslie summarise most accurately. Mother Church and her Bishops are found wanting in the matter of formation for those who have a role in p...

Re: CD 'accompaniment' at Mass
Can singing with CDs ever work? I'd have preferred to have sung unaccompanied. Perhaps a more pertinent question relates to whether this practice is licit. The Sacred Congregation of Rites specified that it was not as long ago as 1958: The use of automatic instruments and machines, such as the auto...

Re: St Gregory to becomes a Feast
Odd. I get the impression some want a universal calendar and an Anglophone version of the liturgy. It is difficult to tell from this post exactly what Northern Tenor considers to be at issue as the topic of liturgical language has been hiterto entirely absent from this thread. Indeed, I cannot reca...

Re: Niceblogs
Yes, John. Rather than discuss the issues and their finer points he’s characterised those he disagrees with as stupid and “right wing”. That not only lacks intellectual penetration – it’s also (remembering your thread title) not vey nice. Why would one assume that being described as "right win...

Re: St Gregory to becomes a Feast
One might go as far as to say that it is our bishops who belittle the Celtic Church by asking for Gregory and Augustine to be elevated to feasts, while not requesting that Celtic saints are treated in the same manner. Bede, a doctor of the church, remains a memorial. Rome, by granting recognitio , c...

Re: Niceblogs
The Praytell blog, previously mentioned in this forum, seems to me to be a site which is remarkably balanced, well informed, and receptive to most shades of liturgical opinion.

I concur with my compatriot organ stop. ICEL1973 and ICEL2010 would be concise and non-emotive descriptors.

Any collection of wedding music should of course contain the correct music to be sung at a Nuptial Mass.

Re: Papal Visit
It is certainly true that "perform" is a perfectly good verb, it is even regular. One would hope that the context within which it has been employed suggests its meaning to be understood as "to function" and not "to demonstate a skill before an audience."

"Took the blame and bore the wrath"
That sounds like penal substitution to me. A good example of why Catholics should be very wary of importing such material. It is often contrary to the teaching of the Church.

Re: Papal Visit
I'm still amazed at how little time is being allowed to prepare for the visit.[ ]Last time, we had a full year and knew exactly what we were dealing with. However, it's a very different animal from the 1982 visit, which was the first ever by a pope, hence all the souvenirs, etc. This one appears to...
