The Government's Guidelines for Public Worship III - the changes on and from 24th and 28th September
Southern Comfort has already kindly added some comments on the latest position. However, having just finished wading through the latest legislation and the Guidelines issued today (which are appallingly drafted!), I thought that it might be helpful to start a new thread covering all of the latest ch...

Re: The Government's Guidelines for Public Worship II - the return of choir groups
The latest version of the Guidelines follows the change in the law that came into force on 14 September and applies the 'Rule of Six' to singing groups - so that they cannot number more than 6 (see particularly section 4): https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-guidance-for-the-safe-use...

Re: The Government's Guidelines for Public Worship II - the return of choir groups
I guess the problem is that the Guidelines are a 'one size fits all' concept and are not the perfect fit for every faith. My view was that we should aim for a staged recovery, and that is what my PP and I agreed. Stage 1 was a said Mass with the bare minimum. After 3 weeks we moved to Stage 2, which...

Re: The Government's Guidelines for Public Worship II - the return of choir groups
All the stuff about cantors has gone, but I am working on the basis that as there is no 'only where essential' requirement for singing groups, then there are no restrictions on cantors. The drafting of the Guidelines is poor and the cross-referring to the Guidelines for Performances is not hugely he...

The Government's Guidelines for Public Worship II - the return of choir groups
The latest version of the Government's Guidelines came into force this morning: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-guidance-for-the-safe-use-of-places-of-worship-during-the-pandemic-from-4-july They now allow groups (professional and amateur) to sing but (i) there is to be no congre...

Re: Pre-recorded music in liturgy
The problem with your current PP's approach is that it makes it much harder for those priests who will not allow recorded music. I recall a liturgist friend of mine who, with great care, would attempt to persuade people not to have recorded music only to get the response "it was allowed for the...

The Government's Guidelines for Public Worship
Here are the Guidelines that came out this morning. It's fun spotting the differences between these and the guidelines issued by the Bishops Conference last week. In passing, I think that they mean cleaning those parts of a church organ that the virus can land on! Now for the actual legislation....w...

Re: Bishops Conference Guidelines for the Celebration of Public Mass
I imagine someone worked out that there might be hearing problems if you have a cantor wearing a mask or behind a screen! In fact, the changes to the law that will be required to enable public acts of worship have not yet been published. Public Health England has, I understand, been conducting exper...

Re: Redundancy after furlough
I would bet that this is the HR department gathering information before deciding where redundancies may fall in August (probably if there is no return to attended services in church by then) - so they have sent a survey form to parishes - without realising that PPs will hand them to relevant people ...

Re: Live-streamed liturgy: what about music?
I had wondered about doing something similar - but 5/6 hours per hymn is more time than I have to spare...and I lack expertise (and probably the necessary willpower!) so it would probably take a lot longer. In addition, when I mused on this with our clergy there was a reluctance to use what they reg...

Singing in Church
I have read quite a bit about the problems with singing while we have the coronavirus around. In my view, Germany is adopting a sensible approach, for the reasons set out in the following: https://www.drheathernelson.com/singingandcovid19?fbclid=IwAR0b1T-j0T9IHDH7f4fiwU0CY2QrgdNH3koMapXAfFpWISMWq-Lc...

Re: Live-streamed liturgy: what about music?
We tried Zoom, but the varying upload and download speeds of the participants makes it very difficult and people cannot speak together. When I use it (and other systems such as Teams) for large groups in business meetings, we have to have a plan to ensure that no more than one person talks at a time...

Re: Live-streamed liturgy: what about music?
Our daily Evening Prayer via Zoom has gone reasonably well - we get between 15-20 participants and people like the rhythm it gives to their days. Adding music to the Triduum has proved a tougher nut to crack - mainly because the gizmo that I ordered has been stuck with Royal Mail for a couple of wee...
