New Gloria etc (copyright, again)

Am I correct in thinking that in the English translation of 3rd edition of the Roman Missal the Glory to God (and, indeed, the Lord have mercy , the Holy, Holy , etc) is an ICEL text? I ask this because ICEL's current Publication Policies document (m) says: ICET texts are texts that have been produc...

Re: Music & Liturgy for non-members

These days Smiths makes demands on cover design, has a national policy on where particular publications are placed on its magazine stands and demands a guarantee of X thousand sales, that's how they make their money. I think the issue is more to do with the SSG's charitable status and tax. But I'm ...

Re: Music & Liturgy for non-members

When I was on t'committee, this excellent idea came up regularly. I don't fully recollect what the 'legal' issues were, but it was something to do with 'member benefits', preventing us from charging members for the mag. A more practical difficulty was, and is, that, if it were to be offered on the h...

Re: Bring flowers of the rarest

... As for the actual hymn. This is interesting. Look at the different accompaniment versions that are available. Normally people do it in a 'churchy' 4 part block harmony version; but if you look at the 'swing' of the melody, then it clearly will go well (albeit rather crudely) with a waltz type u...

Re: Bring flowers of the rarest

I am not a cradle Catholic, having joined the Church in the 70s while at university. I fully understand how people can retain a strong affection for the hymns and songs of their childhood - there are several hymns for children in Songs of Praise (1931 edition) that can instantly transport me and my ...

Re: O Magnum Mysterium

It's a fair cop, guv. My apologies: I meant O Sacrum Convivium.
Mind you, that piece has tripped me up before too, when I suggested it for Holy Thursday one year, alleluias and all! It was mcb - bless him! - who rumbled me then. :?

I'll be there, Martin, and would like to offer my basso profundo for the choir. Good idea to put the music online - I will learn it in advance!

Re: Settings of psalm 135/6

My setting of Psalm 136, God's love is for ever!, is in Psalm Songs 2. It sets the ICEL Liturgical Psalter text and is rather jolly - two factors which will not commend it to the Conservative Tendency. The accompaniment looks tricky, but just think 'dum-di-dum-di-di-di' and all will be well.

No problem, Nick. It's Fair Use and for study purposes, IMHO. (Rashly speaking in pro parte my fellow editors.)

Re: Girls and boys

In mixed-sex schools the boys are put off long before they encounter the bass clef. It's a cultural thing: "boys don't sing... it's wussy... etc etc". This has never been much of a problem in single-sex schools: when I was at (non-denominational) grammar school in the 60s, our school had a...

Re: Girls and boys

I don't often submit posts, and I did find the thought of using music funding exclusively with boys rather weird. In the ideal world our schools would teach all children to read and sing music. But they don't. And many choirs learn their lines by rote. I feel as though I'm struggling when I'm in a ...

13th in OT 1. The kingdom of God is justice and joy 2. Loving Father, from thy bounty 3. Among us and before us, Lord, you stand 4. Re: O Sacrum Convivium

Just getting my thoughts around planning the Mass for Corpus Christi (coming to a church near you a couple of Sundays from now). Looking at choices of choir pieces I was reminded I'd seen Messiaen's O Sacrum Convivium in among the recommendations for the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday, ...

Re: Change in the parishes?

It is therefore reasonable to expect to sing and hear more Gregorian in English parishes in the future. This was one of the main reasons for the founding of the Society, and the users of this discussion board would necessarily be involved in the process. Readers might be interested to see the origi...
