Re: Advice needed...

Children's Masses, done well, can be fruitful liturgies for both children and adults. Done badly, they can make one wince. The liturgy does not have to be 'dumbed down' for children. Yes, simpler versions of the readings may be used (and that can sometimes be a help to the adults in the congregation...

Re: New Mass text and music

I note that in today's Tablet (14/08/2009), Kevin Mayhew has responded to John Ainslie's letter in last week's issue. He's not a happy bunny! Here's a sample: I can assure Mr Ainslie that our research shows that both the “Clap-hands Gloria” and “Israeli Mass” are in the category of most used settin...

Can I just say that Benevenio has eaten my homemade quiche on many occasions!

And I've always sung it the way SC suggests: Eeh-oh in V2, and striving for 'egg', but usually ending up with 'eck'! :-)

Re: Youth Sunday 2008

IMHO, this isn't as bad as some people think. Okay, it's not great liturgy, but who celebrates great liturgy every week? I know that's what we should be striving for, but there are lots of positives about young people coming together to plan a Mass and, if they follow this guide, they will at least ...

Re: Status of Hymns at Mass

......but also that frequently it can come across as "the time when we all have to sit and wait while the choir shows off" (yes, I know it's judgemental language, but this is what people say). No time to contribute more to this interesting debate now as I only have a 10 minute lunch break...

Re: Status of Hymns at Mass

In our parish, the choir I sing with has been using antiphons and psalms to accompany the Communion procession for a while now. We begin singing as soon as the Priest receives Communion, and finish when the last person has received. We rely heavily, but not exclusively, on the Psallite collection. S...

Re: Communion Antiphon

We regularly use an antiphon with psalm verses during the communion procession and it works really well. I'm not sure you should worry too much about throwing new music at your congregation. The thing about both the psalm response and using an antiphonal piece at communion is that the response is re...

Re: Good Friday ecumenical service

I've used the Stations of the Cross for an ecumenical service before and no-one has been negative about the non-biblical ones. I've used contemporary reflections and prayers at each station, and well known hymns. I have quite a few resources if you decide to opt for the Stations and need some ideas....

Re: What do you do if you, your choir or cantors foul up?

I'm not sure why you're worrying. You can bet your bottom dollar that that particular cantor won't make the same mistake again. Even though he laughed with his fellow choir members I'm sure that, deep down, he was just as mortified as you, possibly more so since he was the one actually stood in fron...

Re: What do you do if you, your choir or cantors foul up?

I do feel sad, asb, that certain people have made you think that only perfection will do. God knows we're not perfect. He forgives our sins, and our shortcomings and inadequacies, and our clumsiness and ineptness. If I looked at things as you do, then I'd do very little in life for my life has been ...

Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum [Latin]

Er, my Latin is a little rusty (probably the understatement of the year!). Does anyone have an English translation handy? Rome has 'forgotten' to put up any translations.

Our, ahem, 'folk group' has been singing a plainchant Mass setting during Lent. I am a forty-something who doesn't remember any Latin from the Mass of my youth. I did learn it for a year at school before dropping it because I hated it! And so I approached the idea of singing Latin plainchant for a s...

I'm not sure I agree. If the assembly need prompting to start singing it suggests...... They are not sufficiently familiar with what they are being expected to song That may indeed be the case! It may be a new psalm setting, or a song that is only infrequently used, but is appropriate for a particu...

You were in the wrong place! We were awash with kangaroosies in the (very posh) dining room in Cathedral House whilst we drank our tea after Vespers at St. Chad's. :-)
