Re: Remembrance Sunday

I suspect that prayers like the De Profundis, Memorare and Salve Regina were a victim of the general move away from rote learning in schools. This was not a consequence of Vatican 2 so much as changes to education. We even learnt bits of the Catechism by heart back in the 1950's as well as assorted ...

Re: Procession of Bridesmaids

Love your post, Oops! Another thing that gets my goat is the reluctance to include the name of the organist in wedding & funeral booklets. Everyone, including the full wedding party, readers and priest were mentioned but the Bridal March was played by 'The Church Organist'. As for bride & gr...

Re: Procession of Bridesmaids

It seems to have entered the popular culture and they seem to do it most of the time down our way. It's a recipe for disaster as far as I'm concerned. At a recent wedding we had was a pageboy and 4 bridesmaids. In the past, the bridemaids have processed en bloc. This time they were going to process ...

Procession of Bridesmaids

So what do you think about each bridesmaid processing individually down the aisle before the bride?

Re: Pipe Organs and Organists - Dying out?

I very rarely draw the 16 ft manual stops on our organ as they do muddy the sound. However, I am also very aware that they could provide additional bass where an organist is unable to play the pedals. I would encourage anyone who doesn't play the pedals to have organ lessons, so that your congregati...

Re: Magnum Principium

So, in their November plenary, the Bishops Conference of England and Wales decided not to revisit the translation. They say that we have become used to the existing one so we can continue to live with it. I assume they would not agree that we should accept substandard liturgy in general just because...

Shalom song during the Sign of Peace

Personally I'm uncomfortable with singing during the Sign of Peace. My view is that this should be a very simple and brief ceremony to acknowledge our unity before Christ. There are better places and times to celebrate our commitment to others than in the middle of Mass, which is primarily an act of...

Re: Remembrance Sunday

Re no Gloria, please see Southern Comfort's post in the Remembrance Sunday or 33rd Sunday thread last year. As it happened our PP decided to say it anyway...

Re: Proms

I loved the Vespers and thought it sounded less Russian opera and more liturgical. It was great to get a different perspective. I heard a version conducted by Stephen Layton earlier this year and he produced a more Russian sound. I'm afraid I like my comforts so buy tickets instead of promming. Can'...

Re: Remembrance Sunday

I have to say that I don't risk playing descants as our congregation lack confidence: only on Christmas and Easter perhaps when we have strong singers in the choir. I'm sure many parishes have interesting liturgies for this day. For us there was a navel base locally till the 1980s and also earlier a...

Re: Remembrance Sunday

We've more or less settled on a format for our Remembrance Sunday Requiem Mass over the years. There will be a (1 minute) silence as part of the Bidding Prayers. The music list this year is as follows: Mass setting: Glendalough Mass, no Gloria. Gathering Voluntary: Opening of Bach's Actus Tragicus E...

Ace Maria

Just a heads up. Yesterday, for the umpteenth time, a Funeral Director sent me a draft order of service which included 'Ave Maria' played by the organist as a recessional. I asked the FD to check whether the family actually wanted 'As I kneel before you'. Sure enough they did. It's always worth clar...
