Re: "Child Friendliness"

I wonder how cathedral choirs have managed all those years with all that child-unfriendly music.
Sounds like people trying to hide their own taste by patronising children.

Re: Liturgy and Emotional Manipulation

I wonder if the dividing line is between texts that accentuate "I" and "me," and those that focus on "we" and "us." I tend to avoid the "me" stuff in liturgy."

Re: Liturgy and Emotional Manipulation

I used to run the music at quite large healing masses. Can I admit to being quite adept at programming to music to move from quiet supplication at the start through gentle confidence and towards praise and thanks at the end. Emotional manipulation, or setting the atmosphere is what musical planning ...

Re: Teach yourself MacMillan

Had a listen. The organ part seems a bit of a handful for the typical reluctant accompanist at St Bogwash by the gasworks.

Re: Reputation

I suspect that what they are hankering for is Credo 3 and Missa de Angelis belted out molto con welly. Hardly the musical high points of the Liber Usualis. Stick to your guns of appropriate music performed to the best standard.

Re: US recognitio for new Missal received

People will think I've got a bee in my bonnet, but at the risk of boring everyone here, I thought I would share this. http://www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=7437 "In his archdiocesan newspaper column, Chicago’s Cardinal Francis George discusses the preparations that sho...

Re: US recognitio for new Missal received

Seems like the Aussies are doing it more gradually

That would certainly help with getting music settings off the ground.

Re: US recognitio for new Missal received

I might be wrong, but I thought that the principle of collegiality was promulgated by the entire Church including the Pope in Council. Is someone saying that the Council was in error?

Re: US recognitio for new Missal received

I notice that the German bishops have booted out their latest funerals "translation" and have reverted to the previous one.

Re: Papal Visit

If you're referring to my comment, Alan, I think that qualifies as an Aunt Sally. whereas the following An NVQ in Liturgical Studies validated by the Liturgy Office of the Diocese of Portsmouth, perhaps? Or maybe a Masters in post-Conciliar liturgical praxis from the University of Neasden? is a mod...

No doubt he has ...... but that doesn't prevent each one of us from improving our own understanding in a way that goes beyond "The Holy father says ......" Neither does it make his liturgical opinions a matter of infallible dictat.

Re: Papal Visit

This is getting to be rather like those fundamentalists who trade blows using biblical verses. I am amazed that people involved in liturgical preparation should pour scorn on the academic study of liturgy. If you chose to turn your back on the theology of liturgy then the community that you serve is...

Re: Papal Visit

I'm interested in the idea that what happens at a Papal Mass with months of preparation/practice and a ministerial cast of thousands can be seen as a model of good practice at St Burgers in the Marsh on any given Sunday at 9.00 am. How does that work exactly?
