Easter Sunday morning Masses

For those of you that do the Easter Vigil "properly" - ie not starting until at least one hour after sunset - do you still have a full complement of Easter Sunday morning Masses? Or do you cut the number down (logically, omitting the earliest Sunday morning Mass) following the late finish ...

Re: You can't please all the people all of the time

Oops. I think it helps if like me you have been a parishioner for 30 years with wife and kids, are 6 foot 3, and have a moustache that bristles nicely when upset. Well........ We've been here and active in the two parishes here for 20 years, I have family here that goes back 4 generations and, alth...

Re: You can't please all the people all of the time

And how do you ruin someone's favourite hymn? Well, first of all the favorite him in question was Amazing Grace. So I have to challenge the woman's taste!!! We did a 3-part harmony acapella version with a different melody. Somewhat Gospel in style. I had picked it up in one or two liturgical worksh...

You can't please all the people all of the time

I have received two unsolicited pieces of feedback from tonight's Mass at which our group played. One said that the entire Mass was beautiful and that they loved all the music. The other said (through somebody else) that we ruined her favorite hymn and disliked it so much that she walked out early!!...

Re: Liturgy Meetings

Given that you are now a combination of two parishes it may be of value. We are two parishes with one priest and three Sunday Masses (though three are CERTAINLY not required) and, much to my frustration, there is little if any crossover or coordination. On Thursday we had our first rehearsal for the...

Re: Triduum accompaniment

Thank you for your replies, especially SC and KA; I concur with your "sensible compromise" approach but I'm in something of a battle for which I required additional firepower - I think you provided it. Now let's see whether it's decisive. Keep us posted! I can report a qualified success!

Triduum accompaniment

"During the same period ( ie between the Gloria of Maundy Thursday and that of the Easter Vigil ), the organ and other musical instruments may be used only for the purpose of supporting the singing." Some guidance, please (as the old phrase put it - how far can you go?), as well as example...

Re: International Declaration on Sacred Music "Cantate Domino"

Now that's got me thinking! Yes, using one hymnal is limiting but I wonder what percentage of it we do use!!

Knowing me I will go and work it out!!

Re: International Declaration on Sacred Music "Cantate Domino"

..........there is still the notion of cutting your coat according to your cloth. That is just common sense in my view. Very much so, but at the same time we must be aspirational in what we do. I get a little concerned when I hear people say that we should give the congregation "want they want...

Re: Music and Church: Cult and Culture 50 years after Musicam Sacram

And more often those charisms are absent. Or latent or nascent, perhaps. And that's where formation and training is SO important. I am naturally fairly musical, but have absolutely no formal musical or liturgical training. Neither, when I was asked to start our music group, was any reading - never ...

The discernment of charisms among his flock is very much part of the priestly role. Too often, however, ministries are assigned to the willing and eager rather than to those who have a genuine charism for that ministry.

Absolutely. And in my experience in several ministries of the Church, we far too often do this very poorly on a parish level!!
