I think the Bps (or certainly the local Ordinary where I was) requested it for the last jubilee. I vaguely remember conducting the choir through it 10 years ago.

Re: Hymn for the Olympics

For what reason was this text composed? What is its proposed liturgical usage?

Re: Congregational singing of hymns

The standard of singing is difficult to judge because it cannot be accurately quantified. Judgement of how well a congregation sings differs from person to person. The baseline is in a different place for all of us, depending on our experience and expectations. As I posted here some years ago. I wou...

Re: Sistine & Westminster choirs

I was due to be at Westminster for this on Sunday evening. Sadly signal failures conspired to prevent me getting there. Alas I can't give a report of the concert, but could give an indepth critique of the trackside graffiti by Alexandra Palace.

Re: Confirmation Service

We have parish confirmations this Thursday evening. This morning the whole parish were invited to attend. Unfortunately this was not to support those members of our community on whom the sacrament will be conferred (I don't know how many or who they are) but to make sure there will be plenty of bums...

I refer the house to this thread, from which we seem to have recycled all of our 'jokes'

Re: Holy Week must haves

The PP now sings the Exsultet rather than the congregation singing the joyful Christ be our Light - although I hear this is the 'proper' way of doing it... One thing I wish would be different is the frequent use of mediocre Offertory hymns such as All that I am and In bread we bring you Lord during...

Re: Confirmation Service

Something which is pertinent to the rite it is accompanying is essential here. The congregation should be joined in prayer for the confirmands during their confirmation. Anything which smacks of keeping the crowd quiet while the Bishop gets on with working his way along the production line won't wor...

Re: Hail Mary in Prayer of the Faithful

I don't think there's anything to be gained in debating (again) whether or not the Hail Mary should be there. I was simply trying to find out whether this was a genuine instruction from on high, or simply a PP redistributing 'blame' for a decision that, while 'doing the red', is sure to be unpopular...

Hail Mary in Prayer of the Faithful

We have discussed here the anomaly of the Hail Mary in the 'bidding prayers' and its history. I do not intend to reopen that debate. However, a report from a parish in Arundel and Brighton tells me the a letter has gone out from the Bishops' Conference to every parish in the country instructing us t...

Re: Preparing for Lent and Easter 2012

42 years presumably equates to a maximum of 42 parishes. This is not a statistically significant sample to make such a sweeping conclusion. Not necessarily, Doc. SC might have collected information from hundreds of parishes during that 42 years. He might, but until we see the data his conclusion is...

Re: Preparing for Lent and Easter 2012

Choose which you want. In my experience over the past 42 years of the revised (1970) rites, everyone does (2), not (1), but I'm sure there must be some places where they cling to the older tradition. It would be good to remember that the plural of anecdote is not data. 42 years presumably equates t...

I can't find any official announcement of this appointment, not any comment elsewhere on the web.

Re: Exsultet

From what little biology I did in school, I seem to recall that wax was made not by "mother bees" (i.e. queens) but by sterile worker bees. If that is indeed the case, while the new translation of the Exsultet adheres closely to the Latin it would appear to be at variance with the reality...
