Well... the phrase Sacred Mysteries comes in a number of places - the rosary group meditates on them, for example. Most often we hear it at the start of Mass: "... to celebrate these Sacred Mysteries, let us call to mind our sins". So, one answer will be that Sacred Mysteries = Mass - ie the celebra...

Isn't the problem here one of language? What does the word confirmation actually mean? Most people probably use confirmation to mean something that they do to agree or concur something - like confirming an hotel booking or airline flight. We confirm it. Surely here we aren't talking about something ...

Music on the SSG website
...when we get music from Composers’ Group on to the SSG website... If you want to speed things on, folks, come to the meetings, get some great music presented - and then email editor@ssg.org.uk to ask the people who control the website content when it will happen. Do we want a repository where w...

J.S. Bach... and so got less music churned out? I bet he'd have made more use of cut-and-paste... I find Sibelius software fantastic for creating taylor-measured music ...leaving the Finale vs Sibelius debate to their own websites , in what way do you "tailor-measure" your music? I'm intrigued by t...

Children's Liturgy
Following a different thought line here! Sparked off by Presbyter and Tsume Tsuyu's comments in the Are you indespensible? thread. There, they posed questions about getting more Catholics and keeping them. It struck me: there is much done, in many parishes, with Children's Liturgy (of the Word). I h...

In the place of work, we take holidays not because the employers think it is a good idea, but because we think it is. It allows us to recharge. In a ministry, we also need time to recharge. Musicians give a lot to the Church, and, in order not to end up being drained, must find some way of spiritual...

Know the scriptures on which you are preaching inside out, their background, to whom they are addressed and so on. with the caveat that the faithful are going to switch off rapidly if the homily tends towards an academic exegesis of each pericope ... I do not think that what I said implies that you...

Sacrsanctum concilium : I accept that there is a lot before you get to chapter 6, and that my use of 'principles' was incorrect! We are however moving from your original question about Rome... If we used, for example, Sir Cliff Richard's setting of the Lord's Prayer within Mass, would that be an ap...

I will welcome any tips to help me preach effectively. What are your thoughts? An interesting request! Given that the Church only permits ordained ministers to preach, can presbyter enlighten us as to what training is given to the clergy to enable to do this effectively? Homilein means 'to have a f...

Perhaps this Bishop spends a lot of time in his diocese, talking with the laity and so knows his flock well? Perhaps his ruling about vigil masses applies to any vigil mass, including those on Saturdays for the Sunday? Perhaps also, he insists on the Easter Vigil being celebrated at 3am so that, as ...

It's dark at 10.00 pm. Actually, sunset on Christmas eve was around 15:50 in Birmingham, and it was certainly pretty dark by 4pm. If darkness is the criterion for celebrating Mass at Night , presumably we could celebrate this mass at 4pm on 24/12... so at what time does Presbyter advise that we cel...

AND another thing! If we take the Scripture as the basis for our music, perhaps ps100 is a reflection of what the musical qualities shiould be: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, or, in another translation, Shout your joy to the Lord. Noise and shouting aren't usually associated with sacred music and ...
