Re: Pentecost sequence.

What you've said is music to my ears Nazard. I agree wholeheartedly.

Re: Pentecost sequence.

Active participation does not mean that every body must sing every thing.
Absolutely.

Beatification

Very reasonable coverage via EWTN of this morning's beatification celebration form Fatima. Commentators yabbering unnecessarily through musical items was relatively minimal (by USA standards that is). There were some lovely choral pieces; at one point the conductor left his rostrum and seemed to beh...

Re: Offertory hymns

Iirc, the tune known as Mozart by some, and Nottingham by others is part of the Kyrie from Mozart's Twelfth Mass.
I'm open to fraternal correction of course. :)

Re: Pentecost sequence.

There's a useful tune named Prompto Gentes Animo that can be found in the English Hymnal (1933 ed) where it's number 653. This tune fits perfectly. It's a tune that was used - maybe still is - by spikey Anglicans as a Kyrie Eleison. Ah! The tune's been shifted in The New English Hymnal (198* ed) to ...

Re: International Hymn Choices

Ahh, but they're thinking of the Pilgrim fathers at the time. Same words but a totally cultural baggage and implied meaning. Many of the US people singing the hymn would be horrified if they knew where it came from and drop it like a hot potato. So the different tune is kinda appropriate. A good po...

Re: International Hymn Choices

I love St Helen. Go for it B.F., it takes no time at all to teach it to the punters in the pews.

Re: International Hymn Choices

When watching Holy Mass from the EWTN chapel I'm often delighted to find that a dormant hymn has be revitalised by simply changing the tune to another like-metered one. The converse is true too of course, Faith of our Fathers sung to St Catherine doesn't cut the custard in the same way as the tune g...

Re: Prof Eamon Duffy on liturgical music

Oops queried;
. . . and does it therefore follow that participatory music cannot also be excellent?
I'm sure that participatory music can and should be excellent Oops, but examples are very few and far between.

Prof Eamon Duffy on liturgical music

Professor Eamon Duffy presented his Private Passions on Radio 3 yesterday (Sunday 30 April 2017). This was a repeat of a prog first broadcast a couple of years back. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04tvnpl He spoke on a number of topics. When asked about the state of liturgical music in the Roman C...

Re: The theme of this Sunday's Mass is . . .

Indeed. Maybe Alan's"To my mind", and MCB's "Yes, I think this is right", is focusing on the issue. In the absence of quality catechesis it's left for us to freely and broadly interpret. It's an interesting subject and one on which guidance is required. I won't hold my breath. :l...

Re: The theme of this Sunday's Mass is . . .

The people who compiled the lectionary were obviously wasting their time, then. The lectionary is fine, compiling as it does, scripture readings for celebrations of Holy Mass. I think the problem may have crept in through a sort of liturgical back door; published lists of hymns/songs/ditties intend...
