Planning for special occasions

We're nearly into First Communion time. Last year the teacher of the class most involved gave me a list of music items, including some from her 'Evangelical worship group.' She is a Catholic but somehow keeps her options open. I have a feeling that a similar list will come my way this week. What mus...

Volunteering

I only have Noteworthy but would be happy to help if I knew what was required. This parish is not the only one in urgent need of music for the Common of the Mass. There must be a huge amount of music out there, of varying merit and useability. I don't know how it can be collated, but it's worth a tr...

No changes suggested by PP yesterday, as Easter hymns were ideal, but marking the Pope's devotion to Our Lady, we sang Hail Queen of Heaven at the Offertory. As it happens, we have the Coventry Sanctus for this season, having not used it for a few years, so that was a useful connection. Also changed...

Does anyone here have a new fire that 'genuinely dispels the darkness?' I was discussing with parish maintenance the possibility of a larger fire than our customary 6 inch brazier on 18 inch high tripod, and we agreed that even if we could get away from the security and street lights, any sizeable f...

Re: Progress report

To deal with the immediate requirements of the Triduum, I've thrown out a general invitation for everyone and anyone who can sing or play an instrument to join what we've called the 'Festival Music Group'. We've even had some takers ! Lucky you! (Said with feeling.) I also put out a general invitat...

Liturgy etc..

How seriously are we to take these instructions? Is this the source of the discussion on paraphrasing the ordinary of the Mass? I note that our PP does not leave the altar at the sign of peace, but when he has been away and it has been necessary to have a Communion Service, our deacon comes right do...

Not so long ago I saw a large pipe organ (recently dismantled), for sale for c.£1500. When I asked how much it would cost to rebuild, I was told around £60K... It was at the time our church was being built. When the serious enquiries began, I looked at a small pipe organ I had played in a soon to ...

Triduum

Dunstan, it is great to be able to communicate with others doing the same job at this time of year. As I posted elsewhere here, we have for the last (help) 17 years sung unaccompanied between the Glorias of the Mass of the Last Supper, and the Vigil. Because I am here, I don't know how others do it,...

Music in Lent

We have usually followed the instruction / direction / suggestion in the diocesan book that there music in lent should only be to support the singing. And we sing unaccompanied from the end of the Gloria on Maundy Thursday until the Gloria at the Vigil.

It emphasises the solemnity of the liturgy.

Yes, every year I sing that and think it's a bit brutal, and not at all PC.

BTW Does anyone else use the three year McCrimmon Psalm book?
The cobbling of the words of today's psalm in the interests of inclusive ( ) language has to be seen to be believed.
