What this people thinks
peace to people of good will No (mcb) this is the ugly bit, because it directly contradicts Jesus' call to us in the beatitudes (Mt5:44-48) by introducing a caveat: 'peace to these people, but not these because (in our judgement) they're no good'. Whether it's an 'accurate translation' or not, I ho...

Hymns to Saints
In my cherished copy of Hymns Prehistoric and Antediluvian , I can find hymns to most of the apostolic premiership, plus a few others*, and a whole stack to martyrs. It is highly thematic, and useful as such. There are very few that I might recognise however; some of these tunes would have last seen...

Thread revival
sid wrote:Can anyone out there say they use the Celebration [Hymnal] Psalms, and what sort of congregational reception to they receive?
In a quiet moment, I'd like to revive this useful thread. Surely there must be some CH psalms that aren't too bad....?

Maybe VML proves that the young have to seek it, and enjoy it, not have a 'facade' of faith (e.g. church on sunday = faith? I think not) 'pushed' upon them? Religion, and/or study of theology is however, growing in popularity. Many faith groups (including *ahem* paganism) are growing too, at univers...

chaplaincies etc
Does anyone know what the other chaplaincies do for their music? Bit off topic, but from my experience it's nowhere near as promising as the article above. One might say that the true future of the Catholic church is found in chaplaincies, but as all chaplaincies seem to operate independently, what...

No problem. I was interested to hear a clerical member of one southern diocese say on (national) radio that he considered it their business to 'put the local Polish priest out of a job' (those are pretty much the words he used ) in their pursuit of effective migrant immigration. I think we can see w...

I am not arguing with you Nick, I'm saying what I feel in my simpleton english. When I talk about english music I mean "it's got english words", and I didn't just say 'space for new composers is limited', I said it's limited within the hymnbooks in general current use , meaning the books a...

To clarify...
Then the music is either unwanted, unsuitable, ill-chosen or just plain yukky. Why use new music if it's not needed? You misunderstand - by 'our own new music', I meant English language, by recognised, published composers: Walker, Farrell, Joncas, Hurd etc. With a rather dated selection of english ...

Migrant music?
As to utilisation of 'world' music into churches, I think this is very much a secondary issue. I've seen it done, and I have to say it is patiently tolerated, but I can't honestly say it appears to provide any 'omni-congregational' benefits, sorry Nick. When in Rome.... It's OK for us right on, one ...

Trying to stay ON TOPIC
Almost precisely my point. I'm sure he was a very nice man and Pope, but he wasn't martyred - deserving of a feast day ? - so Gwyn what are your thoughts on Christingle?

Migrant Workers church support
I think we're about as 'ready for it' as we've ever been - but that's not necessarily bad. One benefit of job-related immigration is that in general (as before) groups of people, not individuals, come to the UK; they are usually not 'isolated' as such, and in many places, they do have their own supp...

introducing new sung repertoire
My preferred solution is to utilise the same mass setting for a liturgical season. This builds up a repertoire of what's important (to sing), makes people and priests less jumpy about 'what are they going to play (that we don't know) this week', and emphasises the seasonal changes. Without choir, on...
