Re: Dr. William Marht on Sacred Music

On an historical plane, here is another new book: ed. Martin V. Clarke: Music and Theology in Nineteenth Century Britain (part of Ashgate's extensive series on Nineteenth Century British Music produced under the general aegis of Bennett Zon). As an academic book this is very expensive, so best to or...

New Directions

This is picking up on the thread with the same name in the Liturgy section. I recently purchased a Priory CD remastered recording of the Papal Mass officated by Pope John Paul II in Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. Looking down the programme I noted just how many major 'new directions' in English C...

Re: New directions?

Restricting my response to purely musical issues I think now really is a good opportunity to explore new (and perhaps revive older) ways of composing and arranging church music. The introduction of new translations ought, in theory, to encourage us to do this, as happened when the last batch of new ...

Re: Schools links and music for young people

My experiences of this have been very depressing. When I worked with a Catholic church between 2005-10 connections with the local Catholic school had been severed before my arrival due to some tiff with the school music department. All my efforts to re-establish contacts fell on deaf ears. All they ...

Re: Chabanel Psalms Year B . . . now complete!

I must say, when I hear of problems with copyrights and authorisations over religious texts like this I come close to despair. I myself have frequently felt unduely restricted by this with my own Responsorial Psalm settings. The gift of compositional creativity is a most uncertain commodity and cann...

Old MA Christ has died

Could anyone tell me who holds the copyright for the 'old' Memorial Acclamation No. 1: Christ has died... ? I note that it is used in the 1973 ICEL translations and by inference incorporated by them in their copyright notice for the whole Mass text. The C. of E. do the same thing with Order I of Hol...

Re: Dumbfounded and Disillusioned

EP has side-tracked us with his suggestion that we should become Protestants. The point of this thread was Psalm Project's complaint that there are some priests who preach against acceptance of the new translation. Quite so. The central issue for me with this thread is whether priests can preach ag...

Re: Dumbfounded and Disillusioned

I would be very upset were anyone to become a protestant. The catholic church is where we belong, and we can be sure that she will be guided by God to the right place in the end. This priest's personal views are just that, personal, and he has no right to force them on anyone. I would recommend tha...

Re: Dumbfounded and Disillusioned

Many thanks, Paul, for your answers to my questions. Just one thing, though, could you - or perhaps someone else - state which statutes/case law substantiate these positions? Even in Common Law, my understanding has always been that there are specific trials (Case Law) to which judges refer when a n...

Re: Dumbfounded and Disillusioned

Many thanks for that reply. I recognise the circumstances you describe. However, I still think it is relevant to ask what statute and case law is applicable in such instances. So, if someone can point to particular items this would be really helpful as it would give some precision to the debate. For...

Re: Only got a piano.

Two days ago the Organ in the Anglican church where I play broke down; so I had to do all the hymns on the Clavinova. The experience was quite enlightening; as they were all block four part harmony settings. In two out of the three cases I found it easy enough just to play the music as it stood with...

Re: Dumbfounded and Disillusioned

Could I ask for some professional legal opinion about what is the law of the land here? For example I know the law frowns on clergy using the pulpit to incite violence, especially of a racial or religious variety. On the other hand the law upholds the right of free speech. If someone (anyone, not ju...

Re: Only got a piano.

Further to discussion about the nature of piano music in church readers might be interested to look at this. It was originally written for use at a Crib service last year, specifically to cover Mary and Joseph's attempts to find accomodation in Bethlehem; so it is not general purpose background musi...

Re: Only got a piano.

If one narrows the discussion to voluntaries then the issue, as Nick suggested, is about associations. An instrumental piece in a service is not necessarily a background accompaniment. If it is, then by defintion, the musical material has to be anodyne and unobtrusive. Music that sets out 'to say so...
